Pauline Watson "Polly" Matthews

Pauline Matthews Obituary

MATTHEWS, PAULINE WATSON, "POLLY", 84 - of Margate, (formerly of Atlantic City), died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Meadowview Nursing Home in Northfield. Pauline was born in Shaft, Maryland to the late Charles and Irene Watson and was also predeceased by her siblings; Irma Gormley, William "Cub" Watson and Lawrence Watson. "Polly" graduated from Beall High School in Frostburg, MD. She then went on to Nursing School in Baltimore where she graduated in 1945 as a Cadet Corps Registered Nurse, from Saint Agnes Hospital. Her dream of serving her country during World War II was never fulfilled, however, as the war ended just prior to her graduation. She moved to Atlantic City and married the late John J. Matthews. Polly worked as a private duty nurse until she became an employee of the Atlantic City Hospital (now the AtlantiCare Regional Care Center). At ACMC, Polly pioneered the first Coronary Care Unit in the State of New Jersey. She served there as Supervisor until she began the first Intensive Care Unit in South Jersey. Following her retirement from that position, she became the Supervisor of Quality Assurance at ACMC, finally retiring from the ACMC in the mid 1980's. Polly was most proud of being a Nurse and was highly respected by the countless doctors, nurses and former patients and their families, whose lives she touched by her dedication to her position. Polly Matthews is survived by her son, John C. (Jack) and his wife Linda, of Margate and one grandchild, John C. Jr. of New York City as well as many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass for Pauline Matthews will be Celebrated by her nephew and Godchild, Fr. Raymond Gormley, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, California and Atlantic Avenues, AC. Friends may call from 9:00am at the Church. The Rite of Committal will be offered at Laurel Memorial Park, Pomona, following Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made, in Pauline's memory, to: Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 2651 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City, N.J. 08401. Arrangements by the Gormley Funeral Home LLC, AC.

Polly was always a wonderful person and a nurse to be admired. I knew Polly for many years, I worked with her in CCU at the hospital. Polly I am sure will be welcomed with open arms by OUR LORD in heaven. May God bless you, her family and keep you. Sincerely, Linda Paloff RN

Jack

Sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. She and my Dad, the late Dr. James Gleason, worked very closely in the Coronary Care Unit at Atlantic City Hospital. My Dad had the utmost respect for your Mom. Our prayers and thought are with you in the time of your loss.
