Richard Philippe Coe, Sr.

March 26, 1939 - April 4, 2025

Richard P. Coe, 86, of Somers Point, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2025.

Richard was a 1957 graduate of Ocean City High School, where he excelled in athletics. As a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, he set the speed record for rowing the entire 23 miles around Ocean City. A lifelong educator, Richard earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the College of New Jersey, and his doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Richard began his teaching career at Mainland Regional High School and then pursued a 40-year career in nuclear technology education. Richard was considered a leading expert in the accreditation of nuclear engineering programs nationally and internationally with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and just recently retired as an Associate Dean of Thomas Edison State University.

Richard served for many years as the President of the Peapack-Gladstone Board of Education and was instrumental in shaping the Somerset Hills Regional School District. He devoted many years of service as a coach and sponsor of community basketball and baseball programs. He was an avid fisherman at the Jersey shore and enjoyed sailing around the country. Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Toni, with whom he enjoyed the Jersey Shore, travel, and dining. Richard is also survived by his sister, Suzanne; sons, Richard Jr., Michael (Christina), and Brian; stepdaughter, Lisa Shiskin (Steven); stepson, Stephen Hicks (Terry); stepdaughter, Kimberly Olsen, and stepdaughter, Kristi Guerin (Robert); and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, James; grandson, Ryan; brothers, David and James.

Services will be private. Richard's family requests that donations in his memory be made to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.
