RUBY HERMAN Obituary

HERMAN, RUBY M. (Nee GRIFFITH) 79 - of Galloway passed away peacefully on September 24, 2013 at home surrounded by her family. Ruby was born on December 22, 1933 and raised in Kansas. She graduated from business school in Kansas City and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Ruby joined the Marines during the Korean War and rose to the rank of Sergeant. While in the Marines, she met a fellow Marine, Bob Herman. Shortly there- after, they were married. This union was truly a match made in heaven as they were happily married for 58 years. Ruby worked at Smithville Inn during the ownership of Fred and Ethel Noyes. She left Smithville Inn to work for The Press of Atlantic City in 1967. When Ruby began her career with the newspaper all aspects of production and distribution took place in Atlantic City. She worked in the Composing Dept. for the hometown paper for 27 years until she retired in 1994. Ruby and Bob moved from Absecon in 1994 and headed south to Washington, NC where they made a host of new friends and enjoyed daily golfing, boating and fishing. Ruby had a deep love of sports. She didn't just watch sports she played at a high level. Ruby won numerous trophies in bowling, but next to Bob, golf was her true love. She was the Ladies Club Champion at Pinelands, (Buena) Washington Yacht and CC, (NC) and also at Mays Landing CC. Ruby, while not boastful (except with Bob), made her 5th Hole in One at the age of 75. While she loved to compete and excelled as a sportswoman, Ruby's greatest love was her family and friends. Ruby is survived by her husband, Bob and four sons: Robert, Jr. (Marianne), James (Kathy), Greg (Cheryl) and Steve; grandson Jimmy, Jr.; granddaughters: Jenell Lee, Jonni Herman and Kyleen Yee; great grandchildren: Kano Lee and Leilani Lee. Ruby came from a large family of 12 children. She is survived by her sisters: Hazel Herold, Sharon Beeman and Mary Ann Thornton; her brothers: James, George, Robert and Richard. Ruby truly enjoyed life. She fought a valiant two year fight against pancreatic cancer. All who knew her were blessed. We will miss her smile, sense of humor, her warmth and kindness. Ruby was a convert to Catholicism. She loved God and her country. Ruby Herman truly: Lived Well, Laughed Often and Loved Much! Visitation will be Sun. Sept. 29th from 5 to 7 PM and Mon. Sept. 30th from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Wimberg Funeral Home 211 E. Great Creek Rd., Galloway, NJ (609) 641-0001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Mon. Dear Bob and family:
What a strong woman. I knew she was ill, but I saw her walking around the neighborhood refusing to give in to her illness. Ruby liked a good time too. I remember some good times sitting around "out back" and just enjoying the company of good neighbors. You are in my prayers.

Dear Bob,

I am deeply sadden to hear of the loss of Ruby. The first time I met her she made me cry; tears of happiness I told her, for she reminded me of my Gram. Her energetic way and her smile always made me smile. I so enjoyed seeing her all the times thereafter. Ruby will be greatly missed.

God Bless her as she moves onto her next adventure.

With my sympathy,

To the Herman family and friends,
Please accept my deepest heartfelt condolences on the loss of Ruby. I barely remember her from my very very young years, but I DO know her sons and the loss of a loved one can never be easy for those of us left here to miss the happy times spent together. To all of you, I will say a prayer for your grief to be short, and your memories to be forever. God bless you and rest peacefully Mrs. H.
