Stella Gluck Hordes
Stella Gluck Hordes, 86, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024, surrounded by family and close friends. Stella was born on November 10, 1937 in Manhattan, NY, to parents Edwin Gluck and Stella Benita Stern Gluck. She married the love of her life, Herbert H. Hordes, in 1955. Together they settled in Hartsdale, NY. where they grew their family and shared three children who meant the world to them. Growing up, Stella attended the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. From this experience, she embraced a humanistic approach towards life. She went on to earn a BA in mathematics from New York University. Stella valued education and continued her quest for knowledge throughout her life. Stella was active in her community and was passionate about many causes. She acted as President of the Woodlands High School Scholarship fund. She volunteered in her children's schools and the PTA (Secretary). In 1986 she and her beloved moved from Hartsdale, NY to southern New Jersey. Here she embarked upon new adventures, developed new friendships, and enthusiastically worked as a realtor. She belonged to the American Association of University Women in both New York and New Jersey - on branch and state boards in both states, serving as President of her New York branch and as state Treasurer and Program Vice-President (branch), and South Jersey Regional Director in New Jersey. In 1993 she joined the Zonta Club in the Atlantic City Area where she was elected Director, Treasurer, and Vice President. Stella was both a founder and an original board member of the Volunteer Center of Atlantic County and was on the ethics committee for the Atlantic City and County Board of Realtors. Stella was a big fan and supporter of The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble. Stella was a feminist. She was a kind, thoughtful and generous woman who will be greatly missed and remembered by the many lives she touched. She was a stiff competitor of strategy games, particularly Bridge, Scrabble, Wordle, and Rummikub. Most recently, she enjoyed participating in her weekly Zoom book club meetings. She was a loyal and caring friend with many long term friendships. She was grateful and appreciative to the friends who went out of their way to stay in touch. Stella was a world traveler, avid reader, supporter of the arts, crafter, pet lover, gardener, and most importantly, a proud parent, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Stella is survived by her children and their families; Susan Hordes McBride, Robert Hordes (Helene Hordes), and Judith Hordes Purcell (Daniel Purcell). Grandchildren; Kathyrn Naccarato (Jared Naccarato), Samantha Hordes Aaron (Jacob Aaron), Lexi Hordes, Brendan Purcell (Elizabeth Purcell), and Evan Purcell. Great-grandchildren; Stella Naccarato and Micah Naccarato. As well as dear family friends; Stuart and Janice Zaiman. Stella was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Hordes; parents Edwin Gluck and Stella Benita Stern Gluck; sister Alice Silverman Gluck; infant daughter Janet Allison Hordes; and grandson Steven Andrew McBride. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Planned Parenthood or the Community Food Bank of New Jersey would be greatly appreciated.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 8th, beginning at 12 p.m. at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home in Linwood, followed by a service at 1pm. Burial will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY. Condolences may be extended to the family at
