William Schnatz Obituary

Schnatz Jr., William "Bill" C., - of Ocean City, N.J. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday February 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Darby, Pa., he was the loving son of the late William C. Schnatz Sr., and Margaret (Broderick) Schnatz. He was the devoted husband of Bettyann with whom he spent 30 blissful years.

Bill was a graduate of West Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pa. He lived and worked on a dairy farm in Glen Mills, Pa . After graduating high school Bill worked in a quarry, eventually buying his own truck (that had no AC or radio) and started hauling steel cross country. During that time, Bill was drafted into the Army. He served as a Private First Class with the 55th Medical Group at Fort Bragg, N.C. and was named solider of the month.

After being discharged from the Army, Bill changed careers to be closer to home. Living in Thorton, Pa., he and his first wife Judy were blessed with children. There, He enjoyed life with many family and friends. He continued his long career as a custom home builder and eventually moved to Ocean City and became the premier builder of beach houses and dreams in the Strathmere, Margate, Ventnor, Longport, and of course Ocean City for the next 35 years.

After moving to Ocean City, he married the girl next door, Bettyann. Together, along with a young daughter, Maribeth, they enjoyed family life in Ocean City until his passing.

Later in life at the Jersey Shore, Bill enjoyed walks with his dog Sugar and loved crossword puzzles, rarely being seen without a pencil in hand. He attended trivia and wing night at the Deauville Inn every week no fail. He was a motorcycle enthusiast riding with the Wednesday Night bike Club in Seaville. Bill was an avid golfer who participated in many fundraising tournaments as well as the Somers Point-Myrtle Beach Golf Club and the Pocono Open Skillet Tournaments. Bill was a member of the Strathmere Environmental and Fishing Club and kept a boat for many years at Whale Beach Marina.

Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus #2560, American Legion Post#524. Bill was a member of St. Damien Catholic Parish and an usher at Our Lady of Good Counsel for over 30 years until he could no longer walk the aisles.

Bill will be missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Bettyann Grasso; daughters, Maribeth (Brian) Grasso-Hill and Amy Berlin; son, William (Susan) Schnatz III; grandsons, Michael (April), Jacob, Adam, Joshua, William IV, Jarrett, and Robert; great-grandson, Colton; sister, Julia Canonica, a host of friends and extended family that fondly called him Uncle Bill. We have a home in the Southend of Ocean City that Bill raised and updated for us a few years ago. He was a kind man and a pleasure to work with. We will miss seeing him on his "perch" doing his crossword puzzles as we would walk by at night. Our deepest sympathy to his family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Bill will definitely be missed.

We live in the Southend of OC and in a house that Bill built. He helped us with a renovation a few years back. It was a pleasure working with him. Bill had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. We will miss seeing him sitting on his porch or driving his truck, always waving hello. A true gentleman.
