BARBARA KITT Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Francis Kitt, 79, of 2141 Bishop Street, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.

She was preceded in her home going to heaven by her daughter, Vanessa D. Kitt; granddaughter, Vanessa Q. Robertson; and her best friend and traveling partner, Annie Marie Nicholas.

Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years (caregiver of 5 years), James H. Kitt; grandson, Antione G. Kitt (whom she raised as her own); two great-granddaughters, Monica Robertson and Brianna Kitt; great-great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Robertson; three sisters, Corrine Kellis and Elizabeth H. Davis of Southampton Long Island, NY, and Beatrice Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Albert Marshall, Jr. (Janice) of Southampton, NY; sisters-in-law, Kim Winston, Minnie Ann Kitt, and Carolyn Robinson, all of Virginia; several friends, Leola Jones, Gloria Pettiford, and Peggy Wright, Ruth Jones, Genise Smith, Diane Byrd and Florence Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

"Barbie" as she was called by family and friends, and "Iceberg Lady," by the Halcum Manor family, where she was also given the title by Community Mother and grandmother, was born on September 17, 1936, to the late Albert and Audrey Marshall, Sr.

She was a childcare provider and homemaker until her declining health. Mrs. Kitt was a wonderful cook, and green thumb, and a flair for fashion (Mrs. Kitt could really dress).

She confessed Christ as her personal Savior at an early age in her hometown of Southampton Long Island, NY, at Shinnecock Presbyterian Church where she was also baptized under the direction of Rev. Vaughan. She later joined Greater Faith A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of Rev. Kenneth W. Arrington with Margaret H. Wright where she served on the Life Member Council and Willing Workers under Mrs. Martha Thorpe.

She had the most generous and kindred spirit never met a stranger. You were always able to get a meal, clothes or pampers for your babies. She would faithfully go to the flea market (she would call her "Thalhimers") to purchase such items for teenage mothers.

The family would like to offer our sincere thanks to the nursing staff of the 5th floor I.C.U. and Dr. Abdul Q Mohiuddin of Southside Regional Medical Center; Dr. Fred Ende, her devoted doctor of 30 years; Dinwiddie Rehabilitation, and Medi Health Hospice and all who took the time to care for our beloved Barbara Kitt.

Services for Mrs. Barbara F. Kitt will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2015, at Greater Faith A.M.E. Zion Church, 1301 Youngs Road, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Audrey Jones, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2015, at the funeral establishment.

The family will assemble at 10 a.m. the day of the service and receive friends at 2141 Bishop Street, Petersburg, Va.

Dear Mrs Kitt,
I won't ever forget what a beautiful and loving woman you were and I've missed you for many years!!! I won't ever forget my sister-in-law to be, your beautiful daughter Vanessa Dale Kitt. She was a Gem just like you!!! I have always kept you and your family in my prayers!!! I haven't seen Antoine since he was five years old!!! Being a thousand miles away, I heard he grew up to be a fine young man and took care of you and his Grandpa!!! May Paradise open its doors for you because you endured life unselfishly and I won't ever forget your community love and how everyone called you and Vanessa mom!!! I pray you get to see your beautiful daughter again and share all the memories you missed!!! My brother never got over Vanessa losing her two days before they were to marry!!!! I won't ever forget March of 1975!!!
God made things easy for you and Pop!!! My love forever and I will pray for you even in the grave that it is stretched to see paradise!!!!

Really sorry to hear about Mrs. Kitt's passing. She was my babysitter (as well as my brother's, Donnie Jones). She was such a loving and caring person. May the comfort of our Lord Jesus Christ carry this family and dear friends during this time.
