Charles Poole Obituary

Mr. Charles "Barney" McKinley Poole of Ettrick went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.

He was born Sept. 20, 1930, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to the late Charlie Poole and Eugenia Fountain Poole. He accepted Christ at an early age at First Union Baptist Church, Richmond under the guidance of his grandfather, the Rev. John E. Fountain. Upon moving to Petersburg he joined Zion Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr.

He was educated in Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1948. Charles received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1967 and a Master of education in Administration and Supervision in 1976 from Virginia State University. He was an excellent athlete and an accomplished football and basketball player. Barney served valiantly in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of 1st lieutenant. After faithful service he retired from the Petersburg City School System. Barney was also a member of various civic, community and Church organizations, among them Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Kiwanis Club, and the Zion Baptist Church where he served on the Finance Committee and volunteered to feed the hungry. Barney was also a civil rights activist.

He was a devoted husband, father, son and brother and was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Elizabeth Francis Stills Poole, and son, Brian Jeffrey Poole.

He leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Barry V. Poole of Ettrick; one sister, Catherine Poole James of Richmond; a host of cousins and devoted friends.

A funeral service will be held 110 a.m. Monday Dec. 8, 2008, at Zion Baptist, Petersburg, with the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr. officiating. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will hold its Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. The interment will be in Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will assemble at the residence one hour prior on the day of service.
