Clarence Oliver Obituary

Mr. Clarence Doctor Oliver 88, of 220 Summit St., Petersburg, departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.

He was born Jan. 4, 1922, to the late Annie and Gilliam Oliver. Mr. Oliver attended Carter G. Woodson High School and later went on to Virginia State College Barber School. He was employed with the department of Alcohol Beverage Control where he retired after 46 years of service. Clarence joined the United States Army PFC where he served overseas for twenty-three months with the 25th Infantry Regiment in Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations. He was awarded three Bronze Service Stars, a World War II Victory medal and a Good Conduct medal. Mr. Oliver was a member of Union Baptist Church in Hopewell.

He was preceded in death by Charles Gustavae Oliver, Jeremiah Cigar Jackson, Sr. and Richard Jamison, Sr.

Clarence leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Evelyn Ballard Oliver of Petersburg; one son, Clarence Alonzo Oliver of Pocono, Pa.; one daughter, Germaine Denise Oliver of Petersburg; two grandchildren, Whitney Austin (Tony) and Denzel Oliver; three brothers, Gale and Floyd Oliver of Richmond and Jacob Oliver (Mary) of Hopewell; four sisters, Grace Lynche and Mary Lee of Baltimore, Md., Esther Sessoms (Ben) of Ettrick and Catherine Goodwyn (Floyd) of Hopewell; one aunt, Roberta Bolling of Blackstone; one uncle, Richard Bell of Blackstone; a sister-in-law, Allene B. Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Roberts of Hopewell and Thomas Roberts of Lawton, Okla.; a host of nieces nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. We especially thank Greenfield Reflections/Alzheimer Association.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Union Baptist Church, Hopewell with the Pastor Joshua N. King Sr. officiating. The Interment will be in Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Dinwiddie. The family will assemble at the residence one hour prior to the service.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg.
