DOREEN CARDEN Obituary

Victoria Doreen Matthews Carden, of Petersburg, Va., widow of Charles Perry Carden, died on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at age 93.

Born on March 29, 1920, in Bethlehem, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Charles Harding Matthews of Southampton, England, and Lillian Florence Darnley Matthews of London. She lived in London for two years and then moved with her parents to Roanoke, Va. She graduated from Roanoke College and was a retired teacher and librarian in Petersburg Public Schools. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Teachers, Zeta Chapter.

Mrs. Carden is survived by her children, Jane Carden Ruffa, Matthew Perry Carden, and Shelley Carden Calabro and husband, Joseph Carl Calabro; three grandchildren, Samuel Charles Calabro, Jason Matthew Calabro and Melissa Carden Calabro.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gerald Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Scholarship Fund, c/o Zeta Chapter, Eloise Franzyshen, President, 9117 Dabney Drive, Sutherland, VA 23885, or Trinity United Methodist Church, 215 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, VA 23803. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
