Francis Glover Obituary

Francis A. "Cotton" Glover completed his life journey on Aug. 22, 2009, at Riverview on the Appomattox in Hopewell, Va.

Born Dec. 1, 1926, in Scotland Neck, N.C., to Harvey and Rose Glover, he lived most of his life in Hopewell.

He graduated from Hopewell High School and RPI. He retired from Hercules Inc. after 33 years of service.

"Cotton" served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir.

He was a member of the barbershop quartet "The Dixie Cats," which performed in area musicals "The Wizard of Oz," "The Music Man" and "Carousel."

Active in the community, he served on the Hopewell School Board and was a trustee for Weston Manor. He wrote "Growing Up In Old Woodlawn," a book of local interest, and was honored for his work.

"Cotton" was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Jean Maddux Glover; his brother, James T. Glover; and nephew, Welmont L. "Chip" Drake.

He is survived by sister, Iris G. Powell of Richmond, Va.; son, Thomas F. Glover and his wife, Barbara, of Chesapeake; daughter, Jan McKently of Wilmington, Del.; granddaughters, Lauren McKently of Coatesville, Pa., and Karen McKently, also of Wilmington; a great-granddaughter, Ava Grace Peterson, also of Coatesville; niece, Donna D. Smith and her husband, Jim, of Williamsburg; and several great-nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at Riverview on the Appomattox and Crater Hospice. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Weston Manor or your favorite charity.

Tommy,
Hamner came by mom's house Friday after the funeral. Nehl and I were both there visiting her. Sorry to hear about your dad; we just lost ours last July and there's just a big hole. I wish I could still call him and say hello. I'm thinking of you. Take care.

Tom and Family, I am very sad to read of the loss of your Dad. I know that he and my Dad, Beauford Ashworth were good friends and spent many joyful hours with the BarberShop music. Iam gratefull to have known him.
