MARION MEARS Obituary

Marion Shelton Mears, 92, of Prince George County passed away at home on February 9, 2021 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Matoaca, Virginia to the late Alvin Shelton Sr. and Josephine Sadler Shelton. Marion was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Mears, a son, E. Wayne Mears and three sisters, Constance S. Mears, Louise S. Wheeler and Virginia S. Mazza. Marion is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Mears (Susan), David L. Mears (Patsy) and one daughter, Wendy M. Fulton; daughter-in-law, Sally B. Mears; nine grandchildren, Ashley M. Powroznik (Ryan), Adam W. Mears (Alicia), Shelley Mears, Shannon M. Barnes, Kimberly M. Cooper (Marc}, Carl D. Mears, Brittany H. Graudiel (Hector), Courtney N. Hall, Hunter A. Hall; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin "Bubba'' Shelton, Herbert M. Shelton and John E. Shelton; one sister, Margaret S. Krause and many nieces and nephews. Marion's greatest love in life was her family. They affectionately called her "GG". As a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. She especially loved to cook and bake for her family. Marion has been a member of Second Baptist Church since 1979. She served on many committees and at many church functions; however, she will be remembered and missed the most for her untiring ministry as the chairman of the church social committee. Marion served in this capacity for 40 years, sometimes sharing the chairmanship with another fine lady, but always in the kitchen. She was keenly aware of scheduled events requiring a meal or the sudden need of one of our families. When a meal was to be prepared, she knew everyone's specialty, so she started calling until her menu was filled. Marion became famous for being able to stretch a dollar further than anyone else we knew. Above the door to the kitchen at the church hangs the sign "Marion's Kitchen". Marion's family surprised her with an 85th Birthday Celebration at the church on October 27, 2013 which included 85 red roses. On her 90th Birthday, the church presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation - In Grateful Recognition of Faithful Service to the Lord and Invaluable Contributions to the Church. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 23, 2021 at Second Baptist Church, 3355 Johnson Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805. Rev. Dr. Joseph Lewis, pastor, and Ronnie Dunford will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the HVAC Project at Second Baptist Church.

Marion Mears was a special person in the eyes of all that knew her. She was the centerpiece of her family and her family loved her deeply. She was a Christian woman who I'm sure was safe in the arms of the Lord long before she passed away. My condolences to her family.
