Melvin Taylor Obituary
Melvin was born on Aug. 23, 1978, to Melvin Donald Taylor Sr. and Sharon Darden Taylor, and was the oldest of four children. He attended school in Petersburg, Va.: Walnut Hill and J.E.B. Stuart Elementary schools, Peabody Middle School and Petersburg High School, graduating in 1996. It was during this time that Melvin Jr. decided to join the National Guard. Although he completed training and graduated at Fort Sill, Okla., D Battery, 1st Battalion, 22nd Field Artillery, 2nd Platoon Bushmasters, he later decided to choose a different career direction.
Melvin worked for WalMart Distribution Center, Sutherland, Va., and was an associate for nine years; he was an unloader in the staple stock receiving area. Melvin was well-liked and known for his million-dollar smile. On several occasions he was awarded Employee of the Month, as recently as December 2011. Melvin was jolly, had a good disposition and exhibited excellent work performance. He was selected as trainer because of his thorough knowledge and the efficiency of his work.
He was a member of Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ and as a youth was instrumental in assisting with the musical development of the church. He enjoyed going to the race track with his father, fishing with his son, Teon, playing video games with his brother, Vincent and his son, going to the firing range with his brother, Clifford and exhibited a special love for his sister, LaChell, who he was protective of.
Melvin loved being around family and was considered the joker of the family. He loved smiling and making others smile. "Melly" was well known among his classmates and enjoyed watching sports with some of his close friends: Terrance Thorne, Brandon Stewart, Travis Battle, Carolos Harmon, Timothy Mitchell, Donnell Kerney Sr., Charles Wiley, Michael Street, Melvin Green, Norman Thorne Jr., Danny Johnson, Donald Jefferson, Demetrius Parson, Dwayne Parson, Cedrick Brown and too many more to list. He also enjoyed cheering for his favorite team the Jacksonville Jaguars. "Melly" made many other special friendships throughout his life to include his girlfriend, Felicia Gray.
He is preceded in death by his aunt, Margaret Robinson, and uncle, Peter Roney.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory, a son, Teon J. Taylor of Dinwiddie, Va.; parents, Mr. Melvin D. Taylor Sr. and Mrs. Sharon Darden Taylor of Petersburg, Va.; two brothers, Clifford T. Taylor Sr. (Tamika) of Petersburg, Va., and Vincent M. Taylor of Suffolk, Va.; one sister, LaChell T. Sanders (Jamar) of Colonial Heights, Va.; one godchild, Jalen Stewart; grandparents, Anna Frances Taylor of Sussex, Va., and Lonnie and Martha Darden of Jamaica, N.Y.; great-grandmother, Mary Darden Bryant of Boykins, Va.; seven aunts, Robin Register of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Walker (Harold) of Hopewell, Va., Carolyn Roney of Richmond, Va., Netra Taylor of Woodbridge, Va., Detra Jones of Sussex, Va., Cynthia Darden-Hunter (Gregory) of Central Islip, N.Y., and Tanya Darden of Jamaica, N.Y.; seven uncles, Charles Taylor (Christine) of Virginia Beach, Va., Alvin Taylor of Norfolk, Va., Jerome Taylor (TaWanda) of Midlothian, Va., Kenneth Taylor of Sussex, Va., Ronald Darden (Sharlena) of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Timothy Taylor of Pikesville, Md., and Daniel Taylor Jr. of Atlanta; mother of his son, Jacqueline Street; a devoted girlfriend, Felicia Gray of Richmond, Va.; and a hosts of great-aunts, great-uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral services for Mr. Melvin D. Taylor Jr. will be held noon Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, and District Elder Melvin D. Taylor Sr., pastor of Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, eulogist. The interment to follow in Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble 11:30 a.m. at the church.
The family will assemble 11 a.m. the day of the services and receive friends at 1432 Young's Road, Petersburg, Va.
