Raphael Cudjoe Obituary

Raphael Aubrey Cudjoe departed this life on Wednesday, March 16, 2011. He was born Dec. 10, 1974, at MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va., to Anthony and Grace (Casedah) Cudjoe.

Raphael was a graduate of Petersburg High School. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he learned valuable life skills and made many lifelong friends. At the age of 26, Raphael earned certification as a licensed practical nurse. He utilized this training, more often than not, without pay to work with the elderly and children with special needs.

Raphael worked as a taxi driver for six years at Boulevard Cab Company and was known for his hard work and dedication to his customers. His favorite song, 'Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody' was the evidence of the man of faith he had become. He led a simple yet fulfilling life. He was zealous for his God, submissive to his pastor, and loved and protected his family and friends. He was a creative writer who enjoyed movies and would often quote lines from his favorite films, such classics as The Ten Commandments' ... "So let it be written. So let it be done!"

Raphael leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Casedah Imani-Cooper, Anthony Cudjoe, and Hugee Cooper; siblings, Amariyah Ammanuelle, Othniel (Heather), Terell, Ruth Anderson, and Kushaiah Hall; devoted grandfather, Yonathan A. Prince; aunts and uncles: Nyoma Judah, Rebekah Basnight, Jeanne Polk, Faith Seward, Geraldine Aloston (Marvin), Ruby Seward, Gloria Burroughs, Jacqueline Pegram (Warren), Yitz'chok Yehudah, Laihairoi Seward (Kimberly), Hambrey, Minister Kenneth Cudjoe (Cartinia), and Arnold Cudjoe; three nieces, Victoria, Tomia, and Azriel; four nephews, Bryant, Rafael, Nahshon, and Jesus; a host of cousins, among them, Deborah, Michael, and Hannah; best friend, Ricardo Hazelwood; Mr. Buck; godsisters, Jewel Farrar and Chamika Miller, devoted friends, Melissa Clarke, Sharon and Tiffany Byrd. Also left to cherish Raphael's memory are Jo'Ziah, Jordan, and Joshua Byrd, to whom he was affectionately known as "Pop-Pop".

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2011, at W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave., Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Marrow Donors Program for Marlon Bowers. www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/marlon

Nice fellow and I loved him as though he were my very own son. Raphael was very helpful and very mannerable. Each day when I step out of my home I am reminded of Raphael as I look at the tree in my front yard that he pruned for me. It has begun to bloom ...

Raphael's smile will continue to make each person who knew him smile. His generous heart and kind words puts him in a special category. Blessings to the Cudjoe family.

April 21, 2011

I can not ever forget my nephew Raphael. He meant more to me that I can express. He always treated me with utmost respect, kindness, tenderness, and generosity.

I loved his smile and the way he said 'Aunt Nay', as though I was special to him.

Raphael often questioned statements, or opinions, which is one of the characteristics of a smart, knowledgeable person, which he was.

One incident that I often recall is when he had a cold and I had given him Vitamin C at 3 1/2 hour intervals all day. Later that evening I caught him 'literally' tipping down the stairs unaware that I was behind him, he whispered to his mother, "Is Aunt Nay down there?" He was a teenager at that time, didn't think the Vitamin C would help, but was taking it because 'Aunt Nay' wanted him to.

I know Raphael really loved me, and I really loved him. I will love and cherish his memory always, and miss his presence, always.

Since my cousin Raphael's passing, so many old memories have been flooding my brain. Raphael as a toddler, diving over my sister Sheba's pregnant stomach when she was carrying her son Nathaniel. Raphael laying on the cool floor in Pin Oaks one dreadfully hot summer day as a little boy. Watching him play under the table in my Mother's apartment in Brooklyn. Flash forward to my last memory, Raphael smiling this beautiful smile as I approached him to give him a hug, just a few short weeks ago. He looked so handsome. Casey (Casedah), Danno (Anthony), I have loved Raphael since the day he was born. He was a kind, generous, loyal, and intelligent man. I continue to be heartbroken over his passing. May The Most High comfort you, and his siblings, and all of us who loved him. Raphael, I will miss you, ani ohevet otkhah (??? ????? ????)

Your presence is truly missed. You were a defender of those everyone else was against.

Yonathan Prince

April 16, 2011

I, Yonathan A. Prince, Raphael's grandfather, was informed after Raphael's demise, that Raphael considered it an honor and a duty to transport me to and from the Tabernacle each week. How wrong he was, because, the honor was mine to have such a grandson as this; one who would want to accompany his grandfather to and from the Tabernacle. I recall Raphael saying to me, "Saved Papa, I love going to the Tabernacle" and I am reminded of Psalm 122, verses 1 and 2: I was glad when they said unto me let us go into the house of the LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates O Jerusalem ... verse 9: Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.

All that I can say at this time is, well done, Raphael. Well done, grandson. Well done!

I pray for your family and friends.

Amariyah, Mrs. Casedah, Ruth & Family
I am extending my sympathies to you and your entire family. Raphael graduated high school with me & I remember him as a kind, quiet person who never bothered anyone. I would always joke with him and get him to laugh. His smile meant a lot, being as though he never really said much and was such a great person, I got a lot out of making him laugh. I have had acquaintances with all of you in some form. I just want you to know how sorry I am for your loss & that you'll be in my prayers. May God Bless you.. Caprina McCoy & family
