SARAH FIELDS Obituary

Mrs. Sarah Walker Fields of 10814 Doyle Blvd, Mckenney Va., slipped into eternal rest on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at her residence. She was born to the Late Henry "Doc" Walker and Gertrude Meade Walker. She was raised in Brunswick County and spent her early years in Alberta, Va.

Mrs. Fields was baptized at an early age at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Va., and worked diligently in the church. After graduating from St. Paul Normal & Industrial School in Lawrenceville, Va., she moved north and worked for some years in Baltimore, Md., and the Bronx, N.Y.

After marrying Mr. Willie Lee Fields of McKenney, Va., she moved back to McKenney where she joined First Baptist Church. She served on the usher board, the church choir, president of the Missionary Circle and church clerk.

While married she obtained her license to be a funeral directress, and along with her husband, Mr. Willie Lee Fields, established the W.L. Fields Funeral Home in 1953. Together they owned and operated the W.L. Fields Funeral Home, which services Southside Virginia, providing quality funeral services to residents of the area. Long before the days of county emergency 911 service, Mrs. Fields and her family operated for many years Fields Emergency Ambulance service providing emergency ambulance transportation for all citizens of Dinwiddie and surrounding counties. Mrs. Fields not only received the calls, but actually drove the ambulance herself to the hospitals in Petersburg and Richmond.

In the late 1960s, Mrs. Fields and Mr. Fields opened a restaurant, Sara Lee's Dairy Hut in Mckenney, Va,, which provided delicious home cooking to all in the area.

Upon the death of her beloved husband in 1975, Mrs. Fields continued to operate and manage Fields Funeral Home until her son, William Lamonte Fields, took over the helm.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Sarah Fields has always been very active in the community and in civic affairs, and she was a long-term active member of the Southside Virginia Funeral Directors Association and the Virginia Morticians Association.

She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Lee Fields; and her siblings, Lucy Tucker and Robert Walker.

Mrs. Fields' philosophy of life has always been to help others as God has helped her.

Left to cherish her legacy are three children: Constance Dallas (James), Wanda Jordan of Atlanta, Ga., and W. Lamonte Fields (Rita) of Mckenney; one sister, Bernice Martindale of Broadnax; seven grandchildren, Amber Jangha (Kweku) of Silver Springs, Md., Heather Brown (Elliott), Crystal Jade Rutland and Kristen Taylor of Atlanta, Ga., W. Lamonte Fields II, Tyler Fields, and Kennedy Fields of Mckenney; a host of nieces, nephews and friends, including devoted long-time friend, Sylvia Epps.

Funeral service for Mrs. Fields will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at 12 p.m. at Big Bethel Baptist Church, Mckenney, Va., pastor, the Rev. Alexander Williams. Her pastor, the Rev. Alvin J. Gurley, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate and the Rev. Winston Bland, pastor of New Witt Baptist Church, Farmville, will deliver the eulogy. Internment will be in the Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Petersburg, Va. Viewing will be on Tuesday at 12 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will assemble at the home on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Funeral Services were entrusted to the W. L. Fields Fuenral Home, 10814 Doyle Blvd., Mckenney, Va., 804-478-4811.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it's the memories of you that are the most precious.
