Sharon Thelma "Booney" Johnson was born on May 14, 1955, to Luke and Jeanette Martin. She transcended this life on Friday, December 2, 2016, in Petersburg, Virginia, while in Hospice care. She was fondly known as Booney to her family and friends who embraced her.
Sharon received her education in the Newark, New Jersey Public School System. She then married the love of her life Lionell Jerome Johnson on May 31, 1973. Two children were born to this union, Sherron Lorraine and Lionell Jerome Jr. Sharon began working for Barlin Company as a distributer. Later Sharon pursued a career as the Ralph Lauren fashion girl for Macy's where she had to walk around the store in Ralph Lauren clothing at Short Hills Mall in New Jersey for many years. Seventeen years ago Lionell and Sharon with their children relocated to Colonial Heights, Virginia. While there she worked for Ingram Company and later at Schmitt Company until her health began to fail and she became disabled.
According to her Mom as a baby she took her time learning how to walk, and when she did, only her toes would touch the floor and she was teased and called tippy toes. Sharon was very aggressive and loved to fight as a young child and teenager. She was given the name "Duke of the Girls" because she would beat up everyone who bothered her at school. However, when she got dressed for church she became quite a young lady. Who would have known that this little thin girl would fight?
Right after her birth she was introduced to the Emmanuel Church of Christ in Newark, New Jersey, and was baptized in Jesus name at the age of twelve. Her Mom raised her in the church and taught her the values of Christianity. At her church she had the pleasure of sitting under two great pastors, District Elder Solomon Sanders and later Bishop James Churchwell Sr. Many years later, she attended a revival at the Mardela Apostolic Church in Maryland where her brother-in-law, Pastor Leon Kornegay, was preaching and she received the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Lionell Jerome Johnson Sr.; her sister, Dolores Harper; her grandparents, Alonzo & Carrie Darden; father and mother-in-law, James and Clarine Johnson; and her granddaughter, Tiyonna Johnson.
Sharon leaves to cherish her memories, her mother, Jeanette Robinson (Harold); daughter, Sherron Johnson; son, Lionell Johnson; sister, Sandra Kornegay (Leon); grandchildren, Laban Johnson (Jessica), Tyneaka Williams, Tishanna, Lionell III, Kharee, Tajha, Javeon and Jaquail; nephews, Bobbie Harper Jr., Stacey Hayes (Jacquie), Byron Harper (Emily) and Shariek Kornegay; cousins, the Rouse sisters, Claudia Brunson, Lisa Murray, Franklin Harrison (Queen), and Darryl Harrison (Wendy). Special lifelong friends from NJ, Elizabeth Wagner, Sharon Bell, Carol Reaves and the Hall family, and her special aunts, Daisey Johnson and Elaine Darden, both from Maryland. Her special extended children, Tawanda Berry and James James Lewis.
In Sharon's final weeks, she repeatedly said "LET GOD DO HIS WORK."
