Artemis Joukowsky Obituary

JOUKOWSKY, ARTEMIS A.W.
of Providence, Rhode Island – Brown University Chancellor Emeritus, international business leader, and noted philanthropist Artemis A. W. Joukowksy died on December 11th 2020 at the age of 89. For 64 years he was a devoted husband to his Brown University college sweetheart Martha Sharp Joukowsky, and subsequently a loving father to Nina Joukowsky Koprulu, Artemis Joukowsky III, and Michael Joukowsky. He is also survived by eight grand children: Emma Rose, Sureya Martha, Lydia Elena, Elena Maria, Alexandra Sophia, Oliver Artemis, Natasha Sally, and E. Artemis. The foremost legacy he leaves this world is his most cherished accomplishment – his family.
Born in Shanghai, China of noble Russian lineage, he immigrated as a child to New York with his parents. He attended the Lawrenceville School where he later served as Trustee (1984-2006) and President of the Board (1997-2001) and was an "ever-true" member of the 1955 graduating class of Brown University.
From 1958 until 1987, Joukowsky devoted his career in international business to the American International Group Incorporated (AIG) in the Special World Markets Division, serving the firm in locations such as Milan, Thailand, Turkey, Hong Kong, and Lebanon. He returned to the United States in 1977 and spent years in New York as President of the Socialist Countries Division.
Artemis Joukowsky subsequently moved to Providence to better support the interests of his alma mater, Brown University as Trustee (1985-1998), Vice Chancellor (1988-1997), Chancellor (1997-1998), Senior Fellow (2007-2009), Board of Fellows (1998-2009) and Chancellor Emeritus (1998-2020). As co-founder and President of the Brown Sports Foundation, he strengthened the university's athletic programs. He worked to improve the campus by chairing the Public Arts committee and the Facilities and Design Committee. Additionally, Joukowsky was a fervent supporter of the Brown Medical School, serving on the Medical School Overseas and Executive Committee as well and the Bio-Medical Affairs Committee.
The Joukowsky family endowed many professorships and scholarships and he worked as a tireless ambassador and fundraiser – leading one of Brown's most successful capital campaigns. He and his beloved Martha were proud to establish the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World in 2004.
In 1996, he received the President's Medal from then President Vartan Gregorian, the Highest honor a Brown University president may bestow. In 2005, he along with his wife received the Rosenberg Medal, the highest honor the Brown faculty bestows. Other awards include the Brown Bear Award in 1998, the Distinguished Service Award for Trusteeship in 2000, the Wilson-DeBlois Award in 2002, and the Warren Alpert Medical School Artemis Joukowsky Award in 2005.
Although his utmost passion was for Brown, Joukowsky also served faithfully as a trustee on many boards including the Lawrenceville School, The King Hussein Foundation, the American Center for Oriental Research, the Community Preparatory School, Common Cause of Rhode Island, Providence Preservation Society, and the American society for Oriental Research. He was decorated in the Order of the Cedars by the country of Lebanon in 1972 and was the recipient of the Order of Independence medal from the country of Jordan in 1996.
Private services for the family will be held at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 1 Catamore Boulevard, East Providence, RI, 02914.

Dear Martha and Family,

Rosemaire and I express sympathy on Artemis' death. We hope that you find solace at this time as you mourn, remember, and are grateful for a hunband and father who lived life well.

To us, Artemis was a wonderful man who made an outstanding contribution to the world. We knew Artemis as one who made a lasting impression on us and the archaeology of Jordan. We were fortunate to receive funding from the Joukowsky Foundation and to have the opportunity to spend time with him both in Petra and at ACOR in Amman. We benefited from his generosity, graciousness, and stories. A wonderful story teller! A wonderful man!
