BRUCE EPLER Obituary

EPLER, BRUCE CARL, Galapagos Visionary and Chronicler, passed away at age 62 in his residence in Charlestown, Rhode Island, on March17, surrounded by family and friends.

Bruce graduated from Nichols College with a degree in forestry. As a University of Rhode Island Masters graduate in Natural Resource Economics, he developed strong ties to the area as a university lecturer and a commissioner of various local institutions. Bruce Epler, a natural resources, tourism and environmental expert, made a positive difference working to make life better for people in more than 20 countries. His love of fishing and the great outdoors coupled with his concern for economic development led him to places as diverse as Guinea Bissau, the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Somalia.

During a lifetime of development work, his greatest contribution was to Ecuador, and especially the Galapagos Islands, through work with URI's Coastal Resource Center, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USAID, the Peace Corps, the Charles Darwin Foundation and the International Development Bank. His book, The Galapagos Guidebook, was the first authoritative guide for visitors to the islands. Bruce played an important role in the Galapagos as an advocate for smart growth.

Bruce Epler will be remembered on June 12 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM on Moonstone Beach, Rhode Island, followed by a gathering at The Cove restaurant in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Contact Vickie Epler-Thompson at laleopard7 gmail.com or 646-734-0141.

Dear family and friends,

The world will miss Bruce - the memories of him throughout the years will be cherished and held deep within our hearts. Yes we grieve - but I hope that all can take comfort in knowing that he is held in God's loving arms and we will meet again on His streets of gold.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. I remember him in school study halls, thoroughly enjoyed talking with him. He inspired me greatly.
He was the type of person you thought about often as you got older wondering where he was and what he was doing. Reading his accomplishments, it sounds like he enjoyed Life. I feel I am a better person for knowing him.
With deep Sympathy for your loss.

Dear Bea,Vic,Paula and Laura,
I wish to offer my condolences and prayers at the passing of Bruce. The time I spent around your family was special and he was a large part of that. Bruce was a great guy in many ways and one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. When I think of you all it will be with a touch of sadness for your loss, but also the the gratitude for having the chance to know Bruce. Rest in peace Bruce, you now have other worlds to explore!
Sincerely,
