Dorothy Vamvaketis Obituary

VAMVAKETIS, DOROTHY L. (BLANCHARD), 94, of Kearsarge Drive, Cranston died Saturday at the Morgan Health Center Johnston. She was the wife of the late Stephen Vamvaketis.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Margaret (Wesley) Blanchard. She was a Cranston resident for over 60 years.

Dorothy was the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Students at Brown University and also served as the librarian at Johnson and Wales prior to her retiring in the early 1970's. She graduated from the former Pembroke Woman's College of Brown University in 1935 and earned her masters degree several years later.

Dorothy was blessed with a natural talent and love of music that enabled her to play several instruments and also having the ability to sing solo on the radio during WWII. She was the choir director at St. David's on the Hill Church in Cranston for many years where she had been a member most of her life. During her retirement Dorothy volunteered much of her time at the St. Elizabeth Home in Providence and was a past secretary of the Cranston Historical Society.

She is survived by her stepsons Peter J. and Paul C., both of Cranston, Philip T. of Germany and several nieces and nephews.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dot was a wonderful woman. She was like a Grandmother to myself and my sister. At this moment, she is probably sitting with Steve with Cookie by her side. She will be greatly missed.
