Ellen GILL-STINEBECK Obituary

GILL-STINEBECK, ELLEN LOUISE 71, of Marshfield, MA passed away peacefully on April 5th in Boston of complications from pulmonary fibrosis while surrounded by her loving family and friends. Ellen was the beloved wife of Dr. David C. Stinebeck. Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, Boston, Ellen was the daughter of the late Edward James Gill and Mary Frances (Scannell) Gill. Ellen died like she lived, with a sharp and quick Irish wit, full of conversation, as well as love and concern for those around her. Ellen completed her undergraduate degree in 1974 at Union College in Schenectady, NY. She and David eventually settled in Warwick, RI where she later attended the University of Rhode Island and earned a master's degree in marriage and family therapy. She worked for many years as a clinician and program manager at Kent County Mental Health in RI while maintaining her own successful private practice in counseling children and adults. Ellen cared deeply and passionately for friends, family and those in need. In recent years she and her husband David wrote and published an historical novel called A Civil General, chronicling the remarkable impact on American society of George Henry Thomas, an important but little known Civil War general in the Union Army. Ellen is survived by her husband, David, three devoted children and their families: Jared C. Stinebeck and wife Amanda Schwait of Silver Spring, MD, Catherine Gill de la Garza, wife Marisa and granddaughter Camila Mae of Seattle, WA and Jeffrey G. Stineback, wife Jennifer and twin granddaughters Lila Mae and Fiona Gill of Dorchester, MA. And her siblings, Mary Mullaney and Edward Gill and her six nieces and nephews, to many of whom she extended great love and care. She also leaves behind her beloved lab mix, Brendan Gill, a loyal and trusted companion over the last several years. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Ellen's life and love at Mass Audubon's Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon, MA on May 3rd at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or MoveOn.org in her memory. The family particularly wants to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the pulmonary and cardiac intensive care units at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham and Boston for the remarkable care, understanding, and compassion they gave to our wife and mother.

Back in the late 1950's, Ellen and I lived on Adelaide st in Jamaica Plain , MA
I would call Ellen and say " let us go get a pizza !
I would then get in my car and drive to her house and she then come running down the stairs, taking the rollers out of her hair and off we would go !! What a great memory !!

Ellen & I shared so many wonderful moments as we were both growing in our awareness of the lack of equality for women, and as we dedicated a segment of our lives to help women who were victims of domestic violence. I am truly saddened to hear of her passing. Janis Fisher, Warwick

All who ever encountered Ellen were forever touched by her fierce spirit and passion for life. She was one of the most important influences of my entire life, a fearless advocate with an incredible sense of humor and beautiful soul. So grateful to have had her in all of our lives. Deepest condolences to my wonderful cousins Jeff, Kate and Jared and their beautiful families. I also wish and pray for much strength for my Uncle David, who was lucky enough to had one of the greatest life partners anyone could ever have.
