John Monteiro Obituary

MONTEIRO, JOHN E., age 86, died at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Providence, the son of the late Pedro Manuel Monteiro and Ida Payne Monteiro, he resided in Cranston for the past 45 years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years Maude Monteiro, his loving daughters; Cheryl Watkins and husband Michael, Lisa-Marie Smith and husband Paul, Linda Monteiro and his sister Gertrude Monteiro Harry. He was the brother of the late Joseph Monteiro and Adeline Gomes. He leaves behind cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren, Tanya, Lauren, Daja, and Gianni. He is mourned by adored in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. John served his country proudly in a segregated Army in the Korean Conflict and Japan. He was known for his remarkable athletic ability and was the star quarterback winning the 1948 Rice Bowl championship in Okinawa, Japan. He was a retired member of Local 251 working for Calore Freight and Spector Red Ball before retirement. He was a tremendous athlete, a Babe Ruth little league coach, and an avid golfer maintaining a handicap of 7 well into his seventies. He will be remembered for his loving kindness, patience and the delightful sense of humor, infectious laugh and bringing light into many lives. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11am in the Swan Point Cemetery Redwood Chapel on Blackstone Boulevard in Providence.
