John Schumaker II Obituary

QUEENSBURY -- John Flock Schumaker, II, 69, of Queensbury, New York passed away at home on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.

He was born in Auburn, New York on March 21, 1947, the son of John F. Schumaker and Jean Bennett Schumaker.

John was raised in Santa Cruz, California and Syracuse, New York. He graduated from Westhill High School. John attended the University of Michigan and Arizona State University majoring in Architecture.

He married Sally St. Andrews in Syracuse, New York on May 25, 1974.

John's career began in Syracuse, New York where he was employed by King & King, AIA and later Finnegan, Lynn & Colburn, P.C. He then moved to New Bern, North Carolina to work for Earl A. Applegate, AIA. After returning to Queensbury, New York, John worked for 18 years at Lincoln Logs, Ltd. as the manager of the Drafting and Engineering Department. In 2001, John began his own business as an Architectural Draftsman.

He traveled extensively in the United States. His interests included golf, music and reading. He was a Civil War historian who enjoyed taking his family to many of the historic sites and battlefields.

John was active in the Queensbury youth athletic programs including Little League, Pop Warner Football, basketball, and Flyers Swim Organization. He also served as President of the Queensbury PTSA and Vice President of the Queensbury Board of Education.

John will be remembered for his compassion, consideration, and dedication to family, friends, and community. As an artist and builder, he had a love of simple, beautiful, functional designs. His assistance and advice were always deeply appreciated.

John was predeceased by his father and his sister-in-law, Dr. Bonnie St. Andrews.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jean Bennett Schumaker, daughter of the late Dr. A. J. Bennett of Auburn, New York.

He is also survived by his best friend, advocate, and loving wife of 42 years, Sally St. Andrews-Schumaker.

He leaves behind his sons whom he loved and was proud of: Jacob and Mark. Jacob lives in Wilmington, North Carolina with his girlfriend, Katie Wimmer. Mark lives in Jersey City, New Jersey with his girlfriend, Ketlin Viil.

John felt fortunate for the joy his two grandchildren added to his life: Aidan and Kellan Schumaker.

His siblings and extended family include his brother Mark Schumaker and his wife, Cynthia, of Albany, New York; his sister Anne Orloski and her husband, James, of Glen Gardner, New Jersey; his in-laws include Sandra McCabe of Queensbury, New York; Christopher St. Andrews and his wife, Jane, of Queensbury, New York; and Dr. Deirdre Neilen of Syracuse, New York.

Nieces and nephews include Michael McCabe and his wife, Mandy, and their children Quinn, Christopher, and Avery of Wake Forest, North Carolina; Jessica McCabe of Queensbury, New York; Dustin St. Andrews and his wife, Angie, and their son Daniel of Glens Falls, New York; Benjamin, Timothy, Zachary, and Laura St. Andrews of Queensbury, New York; Kevin Orloski and his wife, Katelyn, of Phoenix, Arizona; and Jamie Schumaker of Albany, New York.

Extended family and friends include Jude Lehman, Bud and Cheryl York, Dale and Linda Slattery, Ed Swindell and Jessica Parks, Brad and Stephanie Underwood, Rob McArthur, Joseph Ortuno, Darren Crevar, and Mary Gay DeFuria.

The family thanks Dr. A. Gillani, Dr. W. Borgos, Elizabeth Reinhardt, RPA, and High Peaks Hospice for their compassionate care. Special thanks to the Glens Falls Hospital staff for their support, especially T2 and the Care Management Department.

John will be remembered as a gentle man with tremendous courage and quick wit.

Per John's wishes, there will be no calling hours.

A burial ceremony will be held at the Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York at the family's convenience.

The family suggests charitable contributions be made in John's memory to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center c/o Glens Falls Hospital Foundation, 126 South Street, Glens Falls, New York 12801; High Peaks Hospice, 79 Glenwood Avenue, Queensbury, New York 12804; or the United States Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment (www.woundedwarriorregiment.org.

John was the kindest, most helpful, thoughtful person and neighbor anyone could have the pleasure of knowing. He had a way of knowing what needed to be done and quietly just doing it without anyone asking for his help. Fuller Road was a wonderful place to live thanks to John.
