About 8 years ago I was financially struggling and a friend told me about a barber who offered $3 haircuts for the unemployed. Trying to save every cent I could, I ventured over to Riverside Square. When I walked in I was blown away by the ambiance. And John immediately made me feel like I had been going there for years even though I just met him. The big birthday sign on the wall made me wonder how old could he be? Because he certainly didn't seem to be a man in his 80's. He was vital, a fascinating conversationalist and gave a great shave and cut. As I became a regular over the years, I grew more appreciative of what gift the experience was of visiting him and his shop. A gift I began sharing with my young son who would get a kick out of how John called him 'Babe' and always was delighted when John would insist he take more candy from that special drawer. John was a special man and his shop was magical with its walls of history.

I'm so glad my son and I were able to experience John and his shop. A place where a kind man cared enough to offer $3 haircuts to those in need.

He is missed. My condolences to you his family.

My deepest sympathy to your family. While I didn't know John well, he cut my three young sons' hair. He was great with my boys and they were always excited to go to "barber john's"! He was a great part of our community.

To John's Family,
I am so sorry to hear about John's passing! I use to take my Dad to John for his haircuts ! He was such a sweet guy who we loved chatting with! My father was elderly so John would greet us at the door with a walker with wheels and take my father to the chair! My family is of Greek decent and my father loved the fact that John had some Greek in him! It was an honor to know such a wonderful kind hearted man! He will be greatly missed by ALL!

I could always count on good conversation and a great haircut from John. I was so pleased to introduce my son to him for haircuts also. he faithfully went every 2 weeks for his "John the barber' haircut. I was also pleased my son got a chance to see what an old time barber shop looked, smelled, and sounded like, unlike the "Salons" of today. My most sincere condolences to his wife (who always came to pick him up) and his family, friends, and my fellow haircutees who will very much miss our friend, John the barber.

To the Soteros Family: So very sorry for your loss, I had the opportunity to share many heartfelt conversation while he cut my hair for the last twenty five years, and will always remember walking into the barber shop on a slow afternoon and seeing John taking a nap in the chair or walking in the shop on a Saturday morning to standing room only when half of Riversides old timers boys and parents were waiting for their turn in the chair. RIP John.

He cut my hair for over twenty years. He never wasted a second after I walked into his shop to start busting my chops. Then, after I married his niece, it was open season on me. I will miss his wit, his humor, his propensity to know about all things everywhere. I will miss seeing him poking around on his scooter(s). I will miss him! He has left an everlasting indelible mark on my life...and I will be forever grateful for that. Rest in peace Uncle Johnny, aka John "The Barber".
