Justin Monaghan Obituary
He is survived by his maternal grandmother Mary (Robertson) Hebner of Smithfield, his aunts Phyllis Hanna, Ruth Marshall and Beatrice Simonds; and uncle to Hanna and Nathan Hoogasian. Justin is survived by his girlfriend Leanne and numerous cousins. He was pre-deceased by his grandparents George and Yvonne Monaghan and Delbert Duggins.
Justin graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1996 and completed two years of graduate studies. Justin was a member of the Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi honor societies.
He authored and co-authored a number of technical papers and was a contributor to the 1999 RIDOT research publication on mechanically stabilized embankment systems. Justin was employed by GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. since May of 1998 as a practicing geotechnical engineer and most recently as a Project Manager.
Justin was a member of The National Society of Professional Engineers and was selected as the RI Chapters Young Engineer of the Year for 2007. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, serving as the RI Sections President in 2007-2008. He was a member of the Providence Engineering Society; the Geo Institute; and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials.
Most recently, Justin served on the NCEES civil engineering examination committee; as a guest lecturer for the URI senior civil engineering capstone course; and as a participant in the URI mock interviews for the civil engineering graduating class.
Justin, loved the outdoors, was an avid sailor, hiker, surfer and snowboarder. He will be remembered by all those who loved him and the many lives he touched as being a kind, loyal, and faithful person, always there with a helping hand. We will miss, but always remember, his beautiful and radiant smile and his beautiful blue eyes.
His funeral will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Nardolillo Funeral Home-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt.1A) Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St., Narragansett at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS THURSDAY 4-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the URI Foundation, 75 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881.

I am an old college friend of Justin's. He took over my spot in a Bonnet Shores house as I was off to enter the real world in Connecticut. Well, that is the last time I saw Justin, but always hoped we would have a reunion. Your son was a wonderful man. In college, he was probably remembered most for how hard he worked and for how he was so polite to everyone. I received the news thru an e-mail, and must say I was shocked and saddened to hear that Justin is no longer with us. My deepest sympathy goes out to you in this very tough time. Justin, we miss you.

George, Donna, Mary, and Chris, (and the rest of the family)... I did not see this until now but I wanted you to know that I love you all with all my heart. I saw you guys more than my own family! I loved Justin more than anything else in this world. We hoped one day to start a bigger family for all of us. I'll miss him but I'll miss you all as well.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to hte family, friends, and colleagues of Justin. I had known Justin since his undergrad days at URI as I was his TA in soil mechanics and was quite happy that he had chosen geotechnical engineering as his career path. I can vividly remember our times in school, working on concrete canoe, and hanging out during lunch and after class. I am sorry to hear of Justin's passing. My recent loss has given me an acute awareness of the pain of such a loss. Any words of comfort seem inadequate given the bond among Justin his family and friends.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear that Justin is no longer with us. He was such a great guy, kind and loyal. I will always remember how much fun we had together hiking and spending time at the beach…and how welcoming his family was to me. My deepest sorrow for the Monaghan family. I have worked with Justin for the past 8 years and he will be sadly missed around the office. He was always the first person in the office to have flip-flops on when the weather was nice and would run down three flights of stairs faster than anyone I knew. I have not in my life met anyone who met life with so much energy and such a positive attitude. I will always wonder how someone could be so addicted to Tetris and still earn a Masters, co-author a research paper, devote time and energy to undergraduate concrete canoe endeavors, and still have time to be a friend and even adviser to someone old enough to be his father! His friendly, upbeat demeanor was not lost on anyone who had the good fortune to meet him. Always willing to volunteer his help, he was always thinking of others. In a room full of strangers you could count on his genuine "glad to see you" smile ... no matter how long it had been. I wish we had gotten to do that paddling or he had gotten that introduction, perhaps God willing, at a later time.
