Paul Picozzi Obituary

PICOZZI, PAUL A. died on Tuesday at Philip Huilitar from complications of Lewy Body Dementia. He was born in Providence on March 15, 1931, The Ides of March. He was the son of Anna (Ricci) and Amerigo Picozzi and raised in the family home on Carpenter Street. Paul was a graduate of Central High, Providence College and Rhode Island College and attended Boston College Law School. For the last two decades he resided at his home in Warwick which he loved. Paul taught history in the Warwick schools, retiring as department chair at Toll Gate High. Because of his interest in democracy projects, he participated in national programs at Bard, UCLA and Reed colleges. Paul worked with teachers in the Czech Republic and Albania as well as hosting educators from the former GDR to Rhode Island. Paul was a Fulbright Teacher Scholar and studied in Israel. In his retirement he was an adjunct at Bristol Community College. For many years Paul directed camp programs at the Kent County Y and Rocky Hill School. Throughout his life he was committed to high school football, working as a member of the Rhode Island Football Officials Association and an officer of the Rhode Island Gridiron Club. Paul was a dedicated member of Triggs Golf Course. He loved his Catalina, especially sailing on Greenwich Bay in the fall. Paul guided groups to Europe and was 'the' driver for the many adventures with John and Carol exploring our country. Paul will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his daughter Anne, his wife, Carol and his son, John, as well as the many people he touched with his wit and intellect. With Paul's continued commitment to education his remains have been donated to the Anatomical Gift program at Brown University. Funeral arrangements will be private. Rest in Peace Pauley

As a teenager I knew Paul both as a teacher and a mentor at the Kent County YMCA summer camp, where I worked under his guidance. I remember him as a kind, soft-spoken, and gentle man . . . a fine role model. All best wishes to the family at this sad time.

I was very saddened to hear of his passing. He was not only an intelligent, dedicated teacher, but also a real gentleman. More years ago than I care to remember, he caught someone in the back of class surreptitiously sketching a caricature of him pushing his book cart into class. Rather than chastise the student, he said he needed to speak with him after class. And then politely asked if he could hang the drawing in his office. I was not only relieved, but also touched by his genuine decency. RIP, Mr. Picozzi.

To the Picozzi family, my sincere condolences on the passing of Paul. I had the pleasure of knowing Paul through the Football Officials Association and the Providence Gridiron Club. He made his community and state better places through his many outstanding educational endeavors. His legacy will live on in the many students and associates that he influenced during his lifetime. A teacher's influence extends to eternity! Rest in peace Paul--you ran the good race.

I am saddened to learn of Paul's passing. I knew him both as a teacher at Lockwood during the 50's and as a fellow teacher and friend years later at Vets and Toll Gate. At all times, Paul was respected for his intelligence, wit and good nature. My sympathies to Carol, his family and many friends.
