Winters

Gene Bernal, 72, of Winters, died December 31, 2013. He was born October 10, 1941 in Bluett, Texas to Eugenio and Bertha Lerma Bernal and was raised in Uvalde. He graduated from Uvalde High and attended Southwest Texas Jr. College in Uvalde. He married Dora Arredondo July 5, 1964 in Uvalde. He worked for Sam Cane in Corpus Christi and owned 2 restaurants in Uvalde and worked as a meat market manager for Safeway in Ft. Worth and while in Ft. Worth they had Bernal Real Estate Company. They moved to Winters in 1986 and opened Casa Cabana Restaurant and owned Bernal Meat Processing in Coleman. In 1989 they had Casa Cabana #2 in Ballinger for a short time. He was a big supporter of the Winters Public Library. He was a member of the Winters Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Winters City Council. He was a Catholic.

He is survived by his wife: Dora Bernal of Winters. 4 children: Elma Jean Bernal of Winters, Gene Bernal IV of Winters, Albert Bernal and wife Christy of Lubbock and Erik Bernal and wife Heidi of San Antonio. 1 sister: Minerva Bernal-Perez of Boerne. 1 brother: Richard Delgado of Greeley, Colorado. His grandchildren are: Riley Daniel Ripley, Jimmy John Ripley, Julie Lynn Reyna, Mercedes Rachia Bernal, Victoria Myrriah-Renee Bernal, Hunter Nicole Bernal, Nathaniel Bernal, Noah Gene Bernal, Chandler Kae Bernal, Alyah Katrina Sanchez, Tea Katrina Escaresga, Elle Katrina Escaresga, Kire Katrina Bernal, Bryn Katrina Bernal, Marcus C. Guerrero and Matthew C. Guerrero.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 1, 2014 with Rosary at 7:00P.M. Another Rosary was at 7:00 P.M. Thursday January 2, 2014 at the funeral home. A memorial service will be 10:30 A.M. Friday January 3, 2014 at the North Main Church of Christ. Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Monday January 6, 2013 Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde. Burial will be in the Hillcrest cemetery in Uvalde. Local arrangements are with Winters Funeral Home. Arrangements are being handled by Uvalde Funeral Home.

The family request memorials be made to the Winters Public Library or Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
