26, of Barrington, died on May 19, 2017. He fought a hard and brave fight against PTSD and alcoholism. Despite a valiant effort, his battle proved to be more than his body could handle. It is important to his family that those who love him and called him friend know that he never gave up and that Sam fought this fight to the very end.
Sam proudly served in Afghanistan with the 2/6 Marines Weapons Company. He loved football and played hard for Barrington High School.
Sam is the son of John and Sandy Chrupcala, the brother of Elle and Maddie. Sam is the grandson of Gene and Dodie McCarron and Jean and the late Ted Chrupcala. He leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and his dog, Romeo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday May 27, 2017 in Holy Angels Church, 341 Maple Avenue, Barrington. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sam's memory to the Raider Project or LCpl Janos V. Lutz Live to Tell Foundation would be appreciated. Sam believed in these organizations and was an active supporter. Arrangements are by the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, Riverside.

Dear Sam's family and friends,
Sam was a wonderful individual. We went to school together and were not the best of friends, but I remember his smile and how much of a great guy. I remember him back after deployment at our reunion, and our brief catch up conversation. We have lost a wonderful person who served our country with all his heart. He will be missed.

Dear Chrupcala Family,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and prayers. Your loss is almost unimaginable. I truly wish I'd had the pleasure to have met Sam. Clearly, he was a wonderful man. As a Vietnam veteran who works with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, the cause of Sam's death is sadly all to familiar. Please know that Sam's life and death will be remembered, honored and that his life will continue to inspire me and others to help younger veterans even more.

I hope my condolences remind you that Sam's spirit will live on and that others will benefit from his service and his sacrifice.
