I served with Steve in the 101st Signal Battalion Company D. We were recruits in the spring of 1971 and went through our advanced individual training together at Fort Gordon Georgia. Steve was a great guy. He was smart, forward thinking and a wonderful friend to have for the six years I served with him.
My sincere condolences to you Rita.

While I was but a friend of a friend of Rita's, Steve was always open, full of joy, welcoming with a magnificent wit and laugh. My deep condolences to Rita and the boys and their families. And to his beloved Block Island people, you lost a good one. Raise a healthy one to Steve.

Although not close friend of mine, Steve was a regular member of a circle of guys who gathered every morning for coffee. I thoroughly enjoyed his company and his insights into life. I extend my condolences to his family.

Had a wonderful family visit with Rita & Steve last year. My first visit to Block Island and we all had a wonderful time. Steve's kindness, warmth, and caring came through within minutes, & I just wish I had gotten to spend more time with Rita & Steve!

On the behalf of St. Andrew Parish and myself,I extend sincere condolences to Rita and all family members on the death of their beloved Steve. The entire Island and myriad of friends will miss his shy , quiet presence and industrious manner. He always had a project that he was working on! But above all, we will miss his great contribution to the betterment of this BI and his support of numerous causes and charities. May God grant him shalom and, to all of us, the peace that passeth all understanding. Rev. Joseph Protano
