Umberto Bergantini Obituary

BERGANTINI, UMBERTO (ALBERT), led a long and amaz ing life before passing peacefully with his family at his side in his 96th year on July 1, 2011. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Napolillo) Bergantini. Born in Umbria, Italy, he was the oldest son of the late Nicola and Angela (Bassetti) Bergantini. At the age of 13, Albert came to America and began his pastry apprenticeship. He went on to own Albert's Bakery with his wife on the East Side of Providence for many years. He enjoyed working as a pastry chef until age 85. He traveled the world but was happiest in his backyard, abundant with his plants, flowers, and treasured fig trees. But his greatest wealth, he always said, was his family: he was the devoted father to Marie (Richard) Companion, Angela (Dante) Ionata, Jean (Stephen) Grillo, Nancy Bergantini, Geraldine (the late Peter) Williams and Patricia Bergantini. He was also a wonderful grandfather to Aria, Catherine, Laura, Victoria, Michelle, Hilary and Kirk, a great grandfather and brother of John and Arthur Bergantini and the late Jean Scarpellino. A man of many wise sayings. We loved him to bits. His funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:45 am from the PONTARELLI-MARINO HOME, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, 538 Broadway, Providence. Burial to follow in St. Ann Cemetery. VISITATION TUESDAY 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Poverello Center, 538 Broadway, Prov., RI 02909. pontarellimarinofunerals.com

Dear Nancy,
I met your cousin tonight at mass and she told me of the passing of your Dad.He had a great life and was so proud of hid wonderful daughters. And why would he not?
I remember, when we were at Laurel Hill,he would send in an apple/rhubarb pie for us..always delicious. I am so glad I met your cousin at church or I would not have been aware of his passing.I know all you girls were so good to him,and ,I know he was a wonderful father.
Please accept my sympathy.

News of your beloved dad's passing has just been called to my attention. I hasten to express my heartfelt sympathy to you and your entire family. I note that his funeral will be at St. Mary's. My illness prevents my attendance. I recall observing the mutual care you rendered to one another.

Jean has just informed me of the passing of her loving father Al.
Instantly I had recall of the family bakery on Camp street where we all grew up. Al's passing is a testimony to the importance of family, friends, and wonderful memories shared. RIP Al.

Dear Family,
Our deepest sympathies go out to all of you with the passing of your Dad.
We always enjoyed visiting with him and hearing his stories, especially the ones when he was delivering bread to this neighborhood in South County. We feel very fortunate to have met him. He will be truly missed by many.
