I am truly very sorry to hear of Vinnie's passing my deepest sympathy to your family. He was my seventh grade english teacher at Winman jr. high. He used to catch me on the elevator all the time and I had to stay after with him until the bus came.I must of found it educational because I did enjoy very much staying after school with him. I will miss him very much.

Gail, I offer my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I am deeply saddened to have just found out of Vinnie’s passing. He was more than my 9th grade English teacher in 1976. Over the years, he was like a father and big brother to me. Most of all, he was a dear friend who will be deeply missed. I think you knew this but may not remember me because it has been many years since you & I were acquainted. After all, it was when you and Vinnie first met! He humored us all and he was a positive role model who inspired not only me but many others. I tried to get in touch with Vinnie back in ’05 when I was in RI for my Mom’s funeral but with no success. Although we were unable to re-connect, his spirit remains and I will never forget him. Gail, I pray for you and your children to be comforted and peace to be you all and also with Vinnie.

Mr. doyle was a AMAZING teacher. He saw the good in all his students and reach out to the ones that needed that special attention. He was one of the only people in my life who understood me during high school and took the extra time to talk to me. He made me a production assistant in all the plays he did at toll gate and it made me feel very special. He was and always will be a treasured teacher of mine and I will truly miss him. All my sympathies too Mrs. Doyle and his family. Julie S, class of 1988

I offer my deepest condolences to the Doyle family. You can take comfort knowing that Vin (Mr. Doyle) is in a fine place. He leaves a great legacy. He was a fine educator that touched so many of us during such an important time in our lives. In the classroom, on the basketball court, and all over, he set an example for us to follow. If Mr Doyle caught you putting forth less than your best effort, he was not afraid to embarrass you. Just a great educator, a true professional. He also had some of the sharpest elbows that I have ever come across on the basketball court and he definitely was not afraid to let them fly. I see many of my old teammates have commented. We all loved to play ball with Mr Doyle. He was real and he made you better. We are all lucky to have had him in our lives.

To the family of Vinnie Doyle, I knew Vinnie and heard many stories about him from my older sisters and brothers. I was thinking about him just 3 weeks ago when i ran into his next door neighbor, Martha McNulty, when he lived on Henry Street. I asked her if she remembered the Walsh's from Henry Street. She said yes but than asked me if i remembered Vinnie Doyle. I replied yes and she said she liked Vinnie and his brother Tom. I just wanted to share this story with you. my condolences, Barbara Walsh Egan

I am so sorry to hear of Vinny's untimely passing. Back in the late 60's early 70's I knew Vinny when he was in ROTC with a few of my friends. He also was buddies with some of my friends who were on the track team and the soccer team. He was a charming leprechaun then with a smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye. When Winman opened Vinny and I shared 2 parts of a pod. Being a long term sub was bad enough without coming in after a February strike in which we lost the vaction week. By the end of the year I had big time second thoughts about teaching and he made me promise I'd take a job in September and break the kids in my way; then talk to him if I still wanted to quit. Many times over the years I have told people that Vinny was either to blame or was responsible for me staying 33 years.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. May he sit tonight at the right hand of God, and sleep forever in heavenly peace.

this truly is a great loss not just for johnson & wales, the doyle family, but the entire world. Ive personally seen the fire inside him light every single person to come in contact with him, myself one of them. He was an amazing person and even after his passing the effects of his words still greatly impact the lives of his students, friends and family. October 18, 2010

To all of Mr. Doyle’s family—please accept my deepest sympathy. Mr. Doyle was truly a remarkable teacher whose passion for literature and learning helped shape my own. Through his wonderful acting ability, he brought a host of literary and dramatic characters & poetic voices to life. He kept our 8th grade English class at Winman rapt and wanting more. Shakespeare was no longer “boring” and he encouraged us to see Poe in all his macabre glory. He could even animate grammar lessons! I loved Mr. Doyle’s wry wit and sarcasm and the way he wove those traits into his teaching practice. At the same time that he had us laughing, he also had us learning and feeling that his classroom was a safe place to express ideas. I have often channeled him when standing before my own students, especially when trying to convince them that sonnets are still important (and fun!)...and when trying to get that really quiet student to see that his or her voice matters too. Thank you, Mr. Doyle, for continuing to inspire.

I walked into my english class this morning expecting to see Mr. Doyle doing his daily morning crossword puzzle while drinking his coffee. Then a fellow teacher came in and gave us the news of Doyle's passing. No one would believe it. The whole room was silent the whole time. We all thought he would still come walking through the door with his amazing smile. No teacher before him inspired me to write so much. On my last assignment Doyle pulled me over to say "you are such a likeable person" and I can honestly say that made my day. You were such an amazing person Professor Doyle. You will be greatly missed by so many students. My prayers go out to the loved one he left behind.

To Vin's family, I am very sorry to hear of Vin's passing. I first met Vin while going to school at Winman. I never had him as a teacher but spent many hours playing basketball with the teachers and my team mates from the basketball team. Those were great times. Vin would always be teasing you, trying to get you to work harder. At the time, it would get under your skin, but looking back, it was his way of helping you get better. Always the teacher and coach. Years later, I had the pleasure of teaching with Vin at CCRI. I always looked forward to seeing Vin. He always had something interesting to say and was genuinely interested in what was going on in your life.

To the family of Vin Doyle,
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss of a great man who has left this world physically but will live on in the hearts and minds of his many students and I'm proud to say I am one of those grateful few to have been able to witness his talents. Not only was he dedicated to his craft as an English teacher, but he was a man with many facets. I had Mr. Doyle as a 9th grade English teacher in 77-78 at Winman. I was one of a large class of girls with 2 guys that Mr. Doyle was sure was given to him as punishment for hanging a giant stuffed mouse outside of the principal's office (Carl Johnson) the year before. He was also the director of the Winman production of "The Hobbit". (Tony Petrarca's introduction to stage performance). He also was one of the few teachers that offered to stay with the students who were stranded at Winman during the "Blizzard of 78". I was one of those stranded. As I wondered about becoming a teacher, as many of us from the class of 1981 did, I remembered how he made knowing Shakespeare and Poe unforgettable. He reenacted Poe to perfection. His rendition of "A Tell-Tale Heart" still brings chills to me. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
To quote "The Raven", - Nevermore (and that is the saddest part.)
Please accept my deepest condolences and take pride that there are so many of his former students who share the thought that he was "the best teacher we ever had."

VInny was the kid up the street - I followed him through ST Pauls, Hendricken, PC and ROTC - Once when my family was visiting in the 70s, my sister Carolyn gave us a party and invited Vinny - When asked what he'd like to drink, Vinny responded "Do you have any Rye?" A great person with a subtle sense of humor - the world has lost one of the good guys.

By reading all the other entries, one can see that Vincent Doyle a.k.a. "Mr.Doyle" (I always found it difficult to call him by his first name) touched many lives in a profound and postive way. Mine included. I went to Winman and Toll Gate during the 70's but never had the honor to be in Mr.Doyle's classroom. I played basketball during that time and many of my team mates and I would play ball after school in the gym with Mr. Doyle, Mr. Miller and Mr. DiMasi for hours. Ah,those were fun times. It was then that I struck up a friendship with Vincent that lasted over thirty years. He always had time to listen to my problems and offer solutions no matter how busy he was. As a teenager growing up, I found his counsel invaluable. Later in life, I would bump into Vincent at the Greenwood Inn. He would always be the first person to buy a round for us. He was the rarest of individuals and we are all the better for having been in his presence. I was shocked and saddened when I heard of his passing and I offer my sincerest condolences to his family. I also offer my condolences to future students who will never have the priviledge of attending Vincent's classes. You will have missed one of the greatest educators and one of the best human beings. May God bless Mr.Vincent Doyle. Donald Archibald Toll Gate High School class of 1979.

Mrs. Doyle & family, I am so saddened to learn of Mr. Doyle's passing. I can't tell you how many times over the last 20 years I have thought of him with great respect and fondness. He made a very big impact on me when I was a pretty troubled kid. He encouraged me and expressed faith in my talent as a writer. It truly meant the world to me, and gave me the motivation and confidence I lacked from simply knowing he believed in me. I can never thank him enough for that.

Thank you for sharing him with all of us students. He was an amazing man and a wonderful teacher who truly cared about us. He is loved, and he is missed.

I give my heart-felt condolences to the family. Mr. Doyle was THE teacher who made me understand and love Shakespeare (I will never forget how he used an analogy of the Cheers tv show as a formulaic analogy). His sense of humor and teaching style were excellent. I remember so much like when we went "trudging" through the classics and saying,"It's not Anti-gone!" My prayers are with you, he will indeed be missed by all.

Nothing will take away the pain but may you find comfort in these words....

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Doyle for both 8th and 9th grade English at Winman in 82-83 Looking back over all of the teachers I had in both high school and in college, I knew that he was my favorite teacher. We had a great relationship outside of the classroom due to our passion for basketball. I remember him inviting me to play with him and some other teachers after school on Fridays. I will never forget how he challenged me to play one on one for a 6 pack of beer. Being 14 at the time, I explained to him that I could not buy if I lost or drink if I won so we settled on a 6 pack of Coke. When I finally beat him after many attempts,he informed me that he was giving up basketball because he could no longer play it the way it was meant to be played. I will never forget that statement.
I will always remember his great sarcasm and wit. While many didn't understand it, I thought it was hysterical. He was great at making you think he didn't care about you at all when you knew he was always looking out for you. You often hear that a great teacher will stay in your mind long after any academy award winner or world series MVP. He was that guy. My deepest condolences to his family which I never had the privilege of meeting. He was an true original. I know that his memory lives on in the thousands of students that he touched over his many years at Winman and Toll Gate.

Mr. Doyle was my English teacher at Winman in the 70's and I learned a great deal from his wit and wisdom. He made learning fun and had a great gift. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Vin through RITTI. I’ll always remember Vin as a caring, considerate and patience person - and a truly a ‘gentleman’. I am so sorry for your loss. I had Mr. Doyle for English at Winman in th early 70's. He was one of my most influential teachers....ever.I still, to this day, think of him from time to time and always smile. He taught me so much more than English. He pushed me in ways that no others did. I will never forget Mr. Doyle and the positive influence he had on my life. Stephanie C.

Mr.Doyle was my english teacher at Winman. He was by far the nicest teacher at that school. My sincerest condolences to your entire family.

Vin was the first teacher that talked to us not like the 14-year-old 9th graders that we were, but as smart young adults who's opinions were important. May his family be comforted by the wonderful legacy he leaves. The kids of today could use more Vin Doyles in their lives.

One day in English class, a man entered the room ever so subtly. Cautiously moving along, staring not at any individual, plucking the mortar between the cinder blocks holding the room together, he appeared. He raised his head and revealed a tortured soul looking to enlighten. It was Edgar Allen Poe for just a fleeting moment. We all experienced his presence. It was a gift. Vincent Doyle was the best teacher I ever had. He taught us with a thundering, velvet glove.

God Bless you Mr. Doyle!

To the Doyle Family-
Mr Doyle was one the best teachers I have ever had. It has been over 30 years since I was in his 8th grade English class I can still remember him in front of the class-his love for the written word, his encouragement to us to be thinkers. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Lee Ann (Harrison) DiBiase-Hudson, Ohio

To the Doyle family: I was so saddened to hear of Mr. Doyle's passing. He was my freshman English teacher 27 years ago. He was an amazing teacher. His sarcastic wit was priceless. Mr. Doyle knew how to motivate his students to do their best. He was respected by all of his students and was one of those teachers that you never forgot. To this day, I don't dare use "alot" in my writing, something he taught on day one of his English class. He will be fondly remembered by the many hundreds of former students whose lives he helped to shape. My deepest condolences.

I had the great privilege of having Mr. Doyle as a teacher twice in school, at Winman and then in Toll Gate. Even after years of college having many teachers, he is without a doubt still my favorite! I will never forget him and how he made english class so fun. My deepest sympathies to the Doyle family.

I had Mr. Doyle around 79-80 in Winman and he was a great teacher who was sometimes strict but had a great sense of humor. I very much enjoyed his class!! He also was the biggest Larry Bird fan I knew. He actually taught me alot more than English!! He will be greatly missed!! My deepest sympathies to the Doyle family.

In 1964 Vinnie was a boy scout with Saint Paul’s Troop 9 in Edgewood. While on a joint field trip with the cub scouts there was a swimming accident and Vinnie jumped in and saved me. Vinnie later went on to be an Eagle Scout. He will be missed. Please accept my condolences.
