Gary hired me as a young engineer at (then) Martin Marietta, and showed me the ropes. Unlike many here, I never saw the uniformed Navy side of Gary's life, but he shared several accounts of commanding a combatant vessel. A very decent and positive human being, he will be missed not only by myself, but by any who knew him.

I had the honor to serve with CDR. Barnum as the ship's engineer on the USS McCard. Gary was always calm and understanding especially when we had to get an old ship through a major operational inspection. He was a gentleman who demanded much and was loved by his crew.

I wish we could have spent more time together. I will cherish the time that we did, even if you did steal my nose and tease us that there were crocodiles in the water. I will always remember what a good godfather you were during the time mom was in the hospital. Your calls and support were so very needed. I am glad you are now at peace and in heaven with Aunt Marian. Love you, Uncle Gary.
