Robert Edwin Ernst, 90, passed away, Friday, October 20, 2017, at Somerford Place Hagerstown.
Born Sunday, April 24, 1927 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Gilbert Edwin Ernst and the late Alice Laura (Chrisman) Ernst.
Bob attended Hagerstown High School, in the middle of his senior year, he was drafted in to the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. After the war was over Bob returned home to complete high school, graduating with the Hagerstown High School class of 1947. Bob went on to graduate from Hagerstown Junior College and Shepherd College with a BS degree. Bob along with his wife first owned and operated the Valencia in the North End of Hagerstown. He later began his banking career with GMAC, and later with Second National Bank/Maryland National Bank, but would probably be most remembered for his role with Home Federal Savings Loan, which he retired from in 1986.
Bob was a lifelong member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, where he sang on the Men's Choir and served on the Church Council. Bob was a member of the Hagerstown Rotary Club and the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42. He was a former member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378 and the Alsatia Club. Besides his family, Bob especially enjoyed playing cards and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janet Lee (Nealis)Ernst; daughter, Michele D. Stone, husband, John of Fayetteville; son, Robert E. Ernst, II, wife, Rebecca of Hagerstown, MD; four grandchildren, Joseph Lee Stone, wife, Christine of Hanover, Megan Gates, husband, Jason of Waynesboro, Annie Stone of Chambersburg, and John Robert Stone, wife, Rebecca of Martinsburg, WVa.; nine great-grandchildren, Madeline, Kaitlyn, Sophia, Declan, Lindsey, Emma Grace, Anneliese, Jeremy and Rosalie.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Marie Ernst; sisters, Alice Jane McCardel and Dorothy Young; brother, John G. Ernst.
Services will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 11 a.m., at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. David B. Kaplan officiating.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Private interment will be at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
