George Marsh Obituary

George A. Marsh , 84 passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, 2025 at The Fountains at Dubois Assisted Living Facility with his daughter and son-in-law by his side.
Born on March 2, 1941, in Johnstown, PA, he was the son of the late Alfred S. and Charlotte M. (McClain) Marsh. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harry and David Marsh, an infant Sister and the love of his life Nancy (Galbreath) Marsh who preceded him in death on April 25, 2018.
George is survived by his daughter Tammy (Marsh) Shirey, wife of John and his pride and joy, Grandson Jordan Shirey along with his wife Hannah and great -grand daughters Rebekah and Charlotte, whom he adored. Also survived by Sister-in-law Joyce Marsh, brothers-in-law Gary and Kevin Galbreath and their wives and special niece Kristin (Marsh) Dixon and family, plus numerous cousins.
George was an outstanding athlete and graduate of Richland High School in 1959 where he was a 4 year letterman in football, baseball, and basketball. He went on to Slippery Rock University majoring in Health and Physical Education. He also played for Hahn Packaging in the AAABA where he was known to be the youngest player at age 14 to participate.
As an outstanding catcher it was there that he drew the attention of a scout from The St. Louis Cardinals who approached his Dad and offered to sign him to a contract once he reached the age of 16. He later elected to decline the offer to stay in Johnstown and marry his love, Nancy.
George started his teaching and coaching career at Chestnut Ridge High School in Bedford County. He taught health and physical education and also coached football and basketball from 1965 until 1969. He then went on to accept a position at Ferndale Area School District where he taught and coached football, baseball, and basketball. He retired in 1997 with almost 33 years of dedicated service, including a District 6 championship in football.

He was a former member of the PSEA, NEA, FAEA, PA State Football Coaches Association, Southern Alleghenies Football Coaches, and was a former PIAA basketball official.
He was a founding member of the board of directors at One Life Church, Punxsutawney, PA.
The family would like to thank Tonya and the entire staff at The Fountains at Dubois for the love and care they provided Dad and Pap the last year of his life. He truly loved each and everyone of you and couldn't have been in a better place. We would also like to thank his favorite Hospice nurse Heather, with whom he had a special bond, and all the other nurses who gave him great care from 365 Hospice.
