Martha J. Hoover, 82, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Mahoning Riverside Manor.

Mrs. Hoover was born Sept. 16, 1934, in Moultrie, Georgia, a daughter of the late Clifton and Doris (Attaway) Sellers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl R. Hoover, who passed away April 11, 1988. They were married on March 31, 1954.

She was a nurse for 43 years at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital and was the Cherry Run Camp nurse for 37 years. She was a board member at Cherry Run Camp for 13 years. She was named the 2006 Punxsutawney Woman of the Year and taught child evangelism for 40-plus years. She was involved with American Red Cross blood drives for 29 years.

Mrs. Hoover was also a lunch aid for six years at the Punxsutawney Christian School. She volunteered twice to help with the cleanup after Hurricane Katrina ravaged Pascagoula, Mississippi. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

She is survived by two sons, Timothy E. (Cindy) Hoover of Cloe and Thomas W. (Melissa) Hoover of Punxsutawney; two daughters, Tammy Smith of Punxsutawney and Tabatha Cressley (Scott) of Rochester Mills; a brother, DeRoy Sellers (Margaret) of Colorado; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Francis Sellers; and three sisters, Betty Bell, Annalise Hall and Sharon Davis.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

My dear sweet Aunt Martha. She was a devote Christian and a wonderful nurse. She was such an inspiration to me that I became a nurse too. She will be truly missed. Condolences to her children and my cousins.

Aunt Martha Jean will be missed by all. Growing up we have some really great memories when the families would get together. She dedicated her life loving her family and the Lord. She loved her job as a nurse and dedicated her time and service to others. We will miss you Aunt Martha Jean. Love you.

In fondest memory of the most genuine Christian lady who let me to the Lord in 1971. I will always see her as one of God's hands here on earth. She was much more than Woman of the Year, she was one who spent her lifetime for the cause of Christ. Heaven is rejoicing over her welcome there. Tom, Tammy, Tim and Tabatha, you were so blessed to call her Mom.
