Clayton C. Peterson, 74, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A live-streamed memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, and can be accessed online via https://www.wheelanpressly.com/live-stream. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the funeral home. Live-streamed inurnment with military honors will follow the service in Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, and can be accessed online at 12 p.m. (noon) Wednesday via https://vimeo.com/653061917. Memorials may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #669.
Clayton was born August 27, 1947, in Moline, a son of Walter A. and Edna O. (Oakberg) Peterson. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam era. He married Steven W. Johnson on September 22, 2009 in Davenport. Clayton worked several years as a clerk at the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Alwood Class of 1965 reunion committee, Broadway Neighborhood Metropolitan Community Church serving as Sanctuary Environment Chairman, Equity Project in the 1990's to add sexual orientation to the local ordinances regarding discrimination, and the Mississippi Valley Quilters Guild serving on the program committee and the Quilt Show committee. Clayton was also a member of the Moline Postal Employees Credit Union serving as Secretary/Treasurer, Rock Island Human Rights Commission serving as Secretary, Past President of the Rock Island Preservation Society, Service Plus Credit Union serving as Secretary/Treasurer, member of Quad Citians Affirming Diversity serving as coordinator of the Gay and Gray division, and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #669 serving as secretary and a volunteer during bingo fundraisers.
Those left to cherish Clayton's memory include his husband, Steven; brother, Richard Peterson, New Windsor; sisters and brothers-in-law, Maggie (Butch) Maurer, Orfordville, WI, Mark Johnson, Davenport, and Rita Johnson, Davenport; cousins, Karen Duhig, William Abel, Keith Abel, Pat Brubaker, Penny Black, Lydia Peterson, Linda Lowness, Carl Lund, Mark Lund, Phillip Peterson, Chester Peterson, Mike Peterson, and Peggy Zachrison; and special friend, Scott VanDale.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents.
