Douglas (Dougie) Monroe Smith

Douglas (Dougie) Monroe Smith, Husband, Dad, Bonus Dad, Grandpa and Brother passed away at his home in East Moline, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 1st, 2021 after fighting a short battle against Acute Erythroid Leukemia.
Doug was born to Harold and Juanita (Douglass) Smith, on November 17, 1946, at his grandparents' home in Arcadia Kansas. He lived in Bronaugh, Missouri until moving to Illinois in 1954.
Doug graduated from Riverdale High School in 1965. He proudly served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969. Doug was a founding member of the Hillsdale American Legion and current member of the Coe-Lamb American Legion Post 421.
Doug was a devoted Dad & the BEST BONUS Dad. He loved being a Grandpa and spent much of his time supporting his Grandkids at activities and events. He was an avid fan of the Riverdale Rams.
Doug sold John Deere farm equipment for many years with Brandt and Wade Equipment (Roger Brandt & Lyle Wade). He then worked for Gierke Robinson & Company until retiring in 2014. After retirement, Doug, worked for his son, Mike and daughter-in-law, Anji, at LSI; the job he would call his favorite.
In addition to spending time with his grandchildren at various events, he enjoyed golfing, cheering on The Fighting Illini and The Chicago Bears, and the annual Guys Gone Wild golfing trip to Arizona.
Doug was proceeded in death by his mother and father, and brother Lynn Smith.
Doug is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean, fur babies DJ and Maezy, daughters, Jaimie (Brenda) Smith, Lascassas, TN., Nena (Marvin) Fink, Murfreesboro, TN., Bonus sons, Tom (Janie) Bussert, Port Byron, Mike (Anji) Bussert, Port Byron, Jon (Amber) Bussert, Rapids City. Ten Grandchildren; Olivia (Steven) Soseman, Lila Bussert, Jake, Tyler and Ryan Bussert, Gavin and Vance Bussert, Trent Fink, Joe (Callie) Fink. Brother, Allen (Sandy) Smith, Panama City, FL., sister, Carolyne Smith, Tyler, TX., Diane Smith, Decatur, IL., and many nieces and nephews.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Doug never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone!
Family, friends, and others are invited to celebrate Doug's life at a memorial visitation at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron, IL. on Sunday, December 5th, from 1 to 4. There will be a private family service with military honors on Monday, December 6th.
In lieu of flowers, Doug and his family have requested donations be made to the
Coe-Lamb American Legion Post 421, or the Genesis (Hospice) Foundation.
The family would like to extend special thanks to The University of Iowa Hospitals, Genesis Hospice Nurse, Maggie and Chaplin Chris for the care and compassion shown to Doug and his family during this difficult time.
Tomorrow is never promised, so love and appreciate the people who are in your life.
