John Vander Vennet Obituary
John Vander Vennet
September 18, 1946 - July 17, 2025
John George Vander Vennet was born on September 18, 1946, in Moline, Illinois, to George and Eleanor Vander Vennet. When John was just two years old, the family, including his beloved sister, JoAnn "Jojo", relocated to Anniston, Alabama. In 1959, they moved again to Birmingham before eventually settling in Stockton, California, following a job transfer with Case Tractors.
John attended St. Mary's High School in Stockton, where he proudly lettered in football. After high school, he attended the University of San Francisco and earned a bachelor's degree in history. He then served in the Army Reserves, working as an X-ray technician at Letterman Army Hospital.
Upon returning from the reserves, John began what would become a lifelong calling when he joined the San Francisco Fire Department. Over his 30-year career with SFFD, John built lasting friendships and thrived within the camaraderie and brotherhood of the fire service. He saved numerous lives over the course of his career, including working tirelessly through the aftermath of the Loma Prieta earthquake. He retired as a lieutenant in 2004.
In 1977, John married fellow USF alum Kathleen "Kathy" Deming. Kathy was his cherished partner in all aspects of life, and he loved her deeply. The couple had two children and from the very beginning, Tim and Amy brought him unimaginable joy. He was a devoted and loving father, fiercely proud of who they were and how they lived their lives.
John was a natural coach, a wonderful neighbor, a loyal friend, and a dedicated firefighter. Known for his humor, easygoing nature, and deep love of Lake Tahoe, John's legacy is one of joy, humility, and service. He was a faithful fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants, cheering them on with heart and spirit.
John passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. Above all, John cherished his role as "Papa" to his four adored grandchildren, Edin Quinn, Asher Timothy, Ansel John, and Miles Bennett "Milo". He was endlessly proud of their accomplishments and especially loved watching them play golf.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathy; his son, Tim (Julia), their children, Edin and Asher. Also survived by his daughter, Amy Walker (Rob), and their children, Ansel and Milo. He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn, as well as many cherished cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends. John's warmth, wit, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow at the Oakmont Golf Club.
