Patrick Cavanaugh O'Brien, 64, of Moline, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2023, at home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111-1st St A, Moline. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Project Now and Bethany for Children and Family.
Pat was born October 30, 1959, in Monmouth, the son of John and Roberta (Cavanaugh) O'Brien. He married Cecilia Schaechter on November 23, 1979, at Sacred Heart Church, Moline.
Pat received his Bachelor's degree at Western Illinois University. He worked for Unions IBT and 916 and retired from Local Union 309. He worked as a district director for Congressman Phil Hare until 2011. Most recently he served as Moline Alderman of the 6th Ward and for the State Treasure, Michael Frerichs as Community Affairs Specialist.
Pat was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline and was involved with Project Now and Bethany for Children and Family. He enjoyed his dogs, listening to the Beatles and loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a fierce community advocate, supporting the causes he cared about, such as fighting poverty, protecting the environment, and workers' rights, in word and in deed. He dedicated his life to public service and was always selfless in looking after the best interests of those he served through the decades.
Survivors include his daughter, Kelly (Jeff) Sidor, Denver, CO; grandsons: Owen and Ian; sisters: Bernadette (Steve) Morford, Bettendorf and Elizabeth O'Brien, Silvis; and brothers: Phillip O'Brien, Oak Brook, IL, Dennis O'Brien, Marrietta, GA, and Matthew O'Brien, Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan O'Brien; brother, Daniel O'Brien and wife, Cecilia O'Brien.

It is hard to imagine that a year has passed since Pat left us all to be in a better place with Cecilia. Your legacy lives on now at O'Brien Park in Moline. You are missed!
