Jose Leon Carlos "Charlie" Moya was born June 25, 1949, to Jose Leon and Adelina Moya in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Charlie was called to the lord at his home in Tucumcari on July 15, 2021. He was a jack of all trades but spent the better part of his life as a farmer and rancher in the local area.
Charlie graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1968 and shortly after graduation began work with Quay County Sherriff's office. Later, he transferred over to the Tucumcari Police Department, where he held many different roles and finished up his career as a Detective. Charlie also served as a Quay County Commissioner representing District 1. Charlie dabbled in construction and was a part owner with his brother Ralph in the Vista Tire Service and towing for many years. For the last 3 1/2 years, Charlie's most important job was serving as a caregiver to his beloved wife of 35 years, Bernadette Moya after she suffered a stroke.
Charlie loved being a rancher and was very innovative. There was nothing he could not fix or mend with a little bailing wire and a few loose screws and nails. Spending his time mending fence or fixing windmills is where you found him in his element and dreaming about his next project he was going to fix or build…someday. Although he loved being a rancher, he loved family more than anything. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved them above all other things.
He is survived by his wife Bernadette; his son, Anthony Edwards (Stephanie) of Jacksonville Fl.; daughter, Charlene Benavidez (Charles) of Tucumcari; and his son, Christopher Moya (Adriana) of Edgewood NM. He is also survived by his brothers, Ralph Moya and Howard Moya of Tucumcari; sisters, Aneda Boylan (George) of Santa Fe NM, Dora Maes of Tucumcari, Joanna Moya May (Richard), Imogene Moya Easter of Omaha NE, and Odela Moya (Anthony Romero) of Albuquerque NM. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Selena Moya, Lucia Benevidez, Gabriella Moya, Kristin Pontore, Kayla Cook; his grandsons, Grayson Edwards, Christopher Moya II, Clinton Moya, Joshua Benavidez as well as his great-grandkids, Jason Pontore, Caylee Rae Cook, Ryan Cook, and Sadie Mae Cook. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his Father Jose Leon Moya, his Mother Adelina Moya, his brother Robert Moya and sisters Odela E. Moya and Jeanette A. Moya, and his great Granddaughter Catalina Maria Moya.
Services for Charlie Moya will be held on Friday July 23, 2021, at Saint Anne's Catholic Church in Tucumcari, NM. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 am followed by mass at 10 am. Following the Mass, Charlie will be taken to his final resting spot at the family ranch in Newkirk, NM.
