Brenda was born on January 2, 1964, in Weston County, WY, the daughter of Ernest Sheldon and Beverly Florence (Watt) Thompson. She grew up in Upton, WY, and took the values and strength she learned from her family, and a distinct love of the mountains, with her all her life. After attending and graduating from the University of Wyoming, she lived in Gillette, WY; Denver, CO; Moline, IL; Davenport, IA; and San Antonio, TX, before eventually settling in Muscatine, IA, with her loving husband, Jeffrey Thie, whom she married in 2014.
Brenda offered warmth, listening ears, and wisdom beyond her years, easily creating community everywhere she went. Some of Brenda's happiest times were the Thompson, Watt, De La Cruz, and Thie get-togethers she steadfastly attended and regularly organized across the country, whether meticulously years in advance, or on a whim the week before. Always willing to go the literal and metaphorical distance, she never missed an opportunity to fulfill her cherished roles as mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, wife, and friend.
A natural mother and maternal figure, she bragged unceasingly about her children, stepchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and children of friends. Most recently, she took on her proudest role yet as grandma or "GiGi" to her six adored grandchildren.
Bright, clever, industrious, and with a keen eye for design and practicality, Brenda loved home improvement projects, thrifting, reading, dice and card games, and puzzles. She battled and defeated cancer twice, with courage, humility, humor, and a trademark refusal to allow any circumstance to dampen her fun. She pursued all personal and professional projects with drive and passion and offered a helping hand to anyone in need. A fierce advocate for education, she worked in Davenport (Iowa)
Schools for over 25 years, touching countless lives directly and indirectly with her dedication and diligence.
Brenda is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Thie; daughter, Riley (Sebastian) Peña; son, Nicholas (Kate) De La Cruz; stepdaughters, Kortney (Dillon) Atteberry, Haley Thie, and Hannah Thie; grandchildren, Maxwell, Lennox, Matteo, and Lottie Peña, Anasofía De La Cruz, and Grey Atteberry; and bonus children, Jason and Michael John De La Cruz, Jr., and their respective families. She is also survived by her siblings, Jeanine (Rick) Hayden, Cora Lee (Don) Reynolds, Duane (Terri) Thompson, Kevin Thompson; and brother-in-law, Jay Preston.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marlene Margaret Preston; and niece, Baby Reynolds.
