To the Scott family and friends,
Let me start by saying that without a doubt, there are many people in our community who owe Mr. Scott a debt of gratitude. At a minimum for the time he volunteered, his passion for coaching youth sports and his dedication to helping kids succeed. I know I am indebted as are my parents. Mr. Scott was my mustachioed football coach in the early 1980s.
I have fond memories of playing for Coach Jim as I am sure many do. I enjoyed hard practices and individually working with Coach on techniques, but I especially loved game day. During pre-game, Coach passed around tubes of eye black and pine tar. (That was the best!) It was a great feeling to come off the field after making a big hit or having a solid run and Coach smiling while giving a bop on the helmet.
I also recall Coach Jim and Connie inviting the team to their home for, "chalk talk.". Of course we devoured several dozens of donuts and guzzled gallons of chocolate drinks more than we watched game film.
Without question, Coach cared about winning and, as I remember it, we won many games. But he cared more about us individually as young men. At the time, I thought all of the drills and exercises were merely about football; however, in hindsight, he was teaching pride, discipline, hard work and accountability.
Unfortunately, I never had the chance to tell Coach just how much of an impact he had on me later in life, but I'd like to think he knew. Every fall I see kids practicing football on some makeshift field and it takes me back to Ridgeview Park or game days at West High School. Somewhere along the way I lost the team pictures, jersey and such yet I still have the trophies.
Coach's obituary tells a story of a man who lived a full life. I will add that his spirit and legacy lives on through all of those he inspired on and off the field. My most sincere condolences to Coach Jim's family, loved ones and dear friends.
