Michael was born on the Daylight Saving Day of April 28, 1968 at 3:40 am, immediately losing an hour and having his birth recorded at 4:40 am. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport. Michael graduated from West High School in Davenport in 1986, and attended The University of Iowa before earning a degree in Film and Graphic Arts from Columbia College in Chicago.
Michael lived his life on his own terms and was beloved by so many who were able to share time with him. He embodied an intense entrepreneurial spirit, deep perseverance and the kind of sure-footed confidence that his admirers and detractors alike marveled at.
Michael was insanely witty, drawing on an incredibly dry sense of humor that constantly delighted his friends and family. He was never afraid to rely on the good will and generosity of those he inspired, and gave back three-fold in love, kindness, support and respect.
One of Michael's greatest life-long passions was music. From an early age he began seeking out rock and electronic musicians who existed far outside of the world that was easily available to a teenager from Iowa in the 80's. He loved to blast his music for anyone who visited him, and dance parties were required. His passion for discovering new music continued throughout his life, and he often sent excited texts to his friends whenever he discovered a new band that he loved and thought that they would love, too. This deep connection to music was also the foundation of many of Michael's friendships, and the joy that he found in sharing this experience with others was something that he treasured.
Michael carved out a successful career for himself as a set designer and prop stylist who took countless creative risks, working with the world's best fashion brands, design houses and advertising agencies. Michael's portfolio of work can be seen in campaigns from Aéropostale, Anthropology, Vince Camuto, Judith Leiber, Nine West, Macy's, Pantene and Tretorn to name a just a few. Michael's ability to creatively source assets on time and on budget for so many brands, and then "make the magic happen" on set, led to him being seen by many as a true alchemist.
From his roots in the business in Chicago, Michael went where the action was, relocating to the borough of Brooklyn in New York City in the late 1990's. An authentic Iowa farm boy, after many successful years in New York, he returned to Chicago, forming his own production company, Dirt Road, LLC and eventually Dirt Road Productions, Inc. while continuing to hone his craft. In recent years, Michael returned to his roots in Iowa, settling into a home in Davenport, where he could continue traveling to work on the East Coast while curating beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and restoring a house.
Michael had a passion for the Bull Terrier breed, raising his first bull, Faergus, until the elderly boy's passing, and then raising his beloved Trevor, who survives him and will carry on the great Iowa Hermiston name within the Bull Terrier Kingdom.
Michael will be dearly missed by his mother, Sandy; seven brothers and sisters, Julie Hinds of DeWitt, Iowa, Ronald (Jill) Hermiston of Wheatland, Iowa, Donald (Joanne) Hermiston of Donahue, Iowa, Debra Hermiston of Spring Valley, Illinois, James (Lisa Ricker) Hermiston of Eldridge, Iowa, Kent (Tracey Pike) Hermiston of Mechanicsville, Iowa and Neal Hermiston of Donahue; one uncle, John (Charlene) Hermiston of Blue Grass; four aunts, Ruth Drake, LaDean Christiansen, Doris (Ralph) Bennett, all of Davenport and Patricia Kay Slisz of Lake Villa, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews and family.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Lionel Hermiston; a brother-in-law, Thomas Hinds; and his aunts and uncles, Beverly & Franklin Sommer, Keith Drake, Duane Christiansen, and Ronald Slisz.

There was no one like Michael. I was so fortunate to have met him within my very first weeks of moving to NYC. He was such a pinnacle person in my life. I was instantly drawn to his candid nature, jovial humor, how we were both Midwesterners (he knew that the term "crick" meant a creek), and how he loved to have fun! We spent many years working hard and playing hard together, and we were constantly laughing the whole time. Being we both loved various types of music, Michael definitely opened me up to so many amazing tunes I had never heard which I cherish to this day. I will forever be grateful that I knew Michael, I loved him dearly and he is so missed. My condolences to his family and to everyone who knew and loved him.

Michael was one of one. I have fond memories of NY nights laughing so hard that we were crying at ridiculous things that were only funny to us. He will be missed! My thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.

Michael "Hermie" will always hold a place in my heart as an amazing friend, gifted connoisseur of music, art and culture. We worked and played together for many years in Chicago. He was such a great friend, full of life, laughter and love. We remained friends after I moved away. Getting to visit with Hermie, was a highlight of my many visits back to Chicago. He just sent me a birthday greeting two days before his passing. I'm still in shock over our loss. The world has grown a bit dimmer without his light.

Michael was a kind soul and had a great smile. He will be missed by all. I meet him through my cousin Gino in Chicago so long ago and Michael became a fast friend and I will miss spending time with him - he always cheered me up.
Wishing peace for family & friends.

What a lovely summary of his life. Michael was one of a kind. His wit and openness to be self deprecating at a moments notice will be missed. They don’t make them like Michael-a truly unique man who lived his life to the fullest.

I met Michael on a 24 hour bus ride to Quebec for our 9th grade French trip when we were 14. These 40 years of friendship just weren’t enough. I love seeing the images of Michael pouring in on Facebook from his many close friends across the country. Michael lived large and forged so many strong bonds with deep roots. What a joy it was to be in his company. I will miss him immensely. A life well lived is filled with love, as his was.
