Richard Bourke Thurston, age 87, of Wilton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton. Online condolences may be left at

Richard was born on August 21, 1938, the son of Herman and Mildred (Ringgenberg) Thurston. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1955-1959, aboard the USS Gatling DD-671. Bourke married Carla Dutton on August 8, 1958 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Muscatine.
A proud and dedicated public servant, he spent 35 years as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in Bettendorf. His commitment to helping others also continued through his part-time work with the Wilton Police Department and Per Mar Security in Davenport. Bourke loved traveling and especially wintering with his wife, Carla, in Yuma, Arizona. He enjoyed playing the slots at various casinos and at home, Bourke's happiest moments were spent with his family. The holidays held a special place in his heart, and he made each one memorable. A lifelong fan of westerns, Bourke could often be found watching Gunsmoke. Among his greatest joys was his special nickname Chief, lovingly given to him by his family. It became a title of affection and respect, one that captured the heart of who he was to his family.
Bourke will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Carla; two sons, Richard Alan Thurston of Wapello, Iowa, and Richard Vance (Tammy) Thurston of Wilton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Richard Matthew (Tonya Brokaw) Thurston, Richard Chase Thurston, Alexander Brett Thurston, and Amber Louise Wilhelm; three great grandchildren, Haley, Hannah, and Harper.
Bourke was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard Brett Thurston; four brothers; and one sister.
