Thomas Richmond Obituary

Thomas William Richmond, 87, passed away on November 27, 2025, in Davenport, Iowa.

Born on May 7, 1938, Tom grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where he developed a lifelong love of sports and learning. As a young boy, he sold programs at Sportsman's Park for the St. Louis Cardinals and played baseball and cork ball in his neighborhood. He went on to attend St. Louis University, earning a bachelor's degree in Engineering, and later received master's degrees in Engineering from the University of Iowa and Florida International University.

Tom began his career as an industrial engineer at the Rock Island Arsenal and later worked for Nomura Enterprise Inc. before forming his own consulting firm in Value Engineering. He became a value engineer and was passionate about sharing his knowledge with younger generations, especially through his involvement with the Quad Cities Bridge Building Contest.

A lifelong athlete, Tom was a starting midfielder of the championship-winning soccer teams at St. Louis University in 1959 and 1960-the first years soccer was recognized as an NCAA sport. He continued to play, coach, and referee soccer throughout his life. He also ran more than 40 Bix 7 races and completed several marathons. A dedicated rugby player with Quad Cities Rugby, he enjoyed traveling to Old Boys Rugby festivals around the world.

Tom met his wife Mary Herd Richmond at a Catholic Youth Organization picnic in the Quad Cities. They were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport in 1964, where they remained active parishioners and raised their family.

He is remembered by his children: Joseph Richmond; Andrew Richmond (Michelle); Michael Richmond (ex-wife Ashley Hoskins); Anne Richmond (Douglas Raul Williams); and Matthew Richmond (Marissa); grandchildren Ella and Elsa Richmond; brother John Richmond (Barb); nephew John Richmond Jr.; nephew Patrick Richmond; niece Clare Conway; and sister-in-law Kathy Herd Conway.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary; brothers Father Joseph Richmond and Robert Richmond; and parents Joseph and Gladys Mokwa Richmond.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made to the Quad Cities Engineering and Science Council at https://qcesc.org/supportvolunteer/#donate or by mail to QCESC, P.O. Box 1166, Bettendorf, IA 52722-0020.

All who knew him will miss his quirky sense of humor and his vast knowledge, from baseball trivia to the love of craft beer to his fascination with the English language and his puns and dad jokes.

Yesterday

I was a friend of Tommy´s that worked, ran, talked baseball and drank craft beer with him.
His knowledge, humor and love of life enriched mine.
I´ll miss him. I´m sorry for his family´s loss. So long friend.
