ANDREW JOSEPH HAUNER
September 28, 1926 - October 8, 2025
On October 8, 2025, Andrew Joseph Hauner, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 99 - just 11 days after his 99th birthday, a milestone he proudly achieved. He was born on the family farm in the Cingmars Township outside of Littlefork, Minnesota on September 28, 1926, to Andrew Sr. and Philomena "Mina" Hauner. The fourth of five children, he grew up under the watchful eyes of his older sisters - Philomena "Minnie", Laura, and Emma. He attended school in Littlefork, graduating high school in 1944 and was the last surviving member of is class. He was honored to be selected as the Parade Marshal for the 2025 All-School Reunion.
In 1953, Andrew was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, rising to the rank of Corporal with the 129th Infantry Regiment, Heavy Mortar Company in Fort Lewis, WA. He made lifelong friends in the military, and loved to share tales about Army life. Following his enlistment, he returned to work for his previous employer, Ziegler, in Georgetown, MN. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Irene Westerberg, in Littlefork and together they raised two daughters, Anita and Nancy. He was proud of his girls and passed on to them his values of hard work, stubbornness (the good kind), and sense of humor.
Andrew's career was varied and included logging, trucking, and heavy machinery operator; then working for the Koochiching County Highway Department. He retired in 1988, but for Andrew that didn't mean slowing down. He kept busy working part-time farming and hauling pulpwood. He could fix most anything, and locals often brought him their guns and clocks to repair. Being an active member of the Littlefork Gun Club, he and Irene enjoyed participating in gun shoots and going on hunting trips out West. His ultimate passion was woodworking and gifting his many intricate fretwork projects to friends, family, and everyone he met.
In his later years, Andrew found joy in the simple things: volunteering to mow the cemetery grounds, meeting the café regulars for breakfast, and taking scenic drives in the country, especially to Cingmars - always looking to see what was new and for family or friends to stop and visit with. He took great pride in being from Littlefork and the close knit community it offers.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents Andrew Sr. and Mina; his sisters Minnie (John) Promersberger, Laura (Andrew) Gaetzke, and Emma (Carl) Junker; and his infant brother Edmond, affectionately remembered as "Little Eddie." He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Irene; daughters Anita (George) Gray and Nancy (Mark) Ness; granddaughters Laura Ness, Cora Gray, and Marianne Gray; nieces Evva (Bob) Raymond and Bernadine Junker; nephews Carl Junker, Mike (Judy) Junker, and Bruce (Bonnie) Junker; many grandnieces and grandnephews, honorary son Joseph (Diane) Naegele; and family friend, Maggie Antin, who always managed to make him smile. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A sincere thank you to the staff at Falls Memorial Hospital and the Littlefork Care Center for their wonderful care over these past few months. Per Andrew's wishes, no formal funeral will be held. A private burial service will be held at a later date, likely followed by coffee and the sharing of stories and memories.
