Craig Amundson
Craig Amundson always found computers easy to work with.

It was not only what would lead him to his job at the Pentagon doing computer graphics, but it was a way he found he could help people out.

That included his parents, who run a pharmacy in Hartville, Mo., a town of 700 people in the southwest part of the state.

Earlier this year, he designed a Web page for Star Pharmacy that provided health tips to people who logged on.

"Thanks to Craig Amundson, Webmeister extraordinary, for designing our Web site. A fantastic job. Many thanks for many hours of work," his parents, Orland and Karen, wrote on the site's guestbook after it opened in January.

It was a typical exchange in the close-knit family, said Mary McAfoos, Craig's aunt.

"They're very close. They all drove out there over two days last week" to be at Craig's home in Ft. Belvoir, Va., McAfoos said from her home in Kansas City, Mo. "It's a very tragic time. It has been ups and downs. We're pretty devastated."

Raised in a small town in Iowa, Amundson, 28, had moved his wife and two children to the Washington, D.C. area two years ago to take the job there. He had a bachelor's degree in film studies from the University of Iowa and worked as a multimedia illustrator for the Army's deputy chief of staff for personnel command.

"How do you describe a person?" McAfoos said. "He was optimistic. Had an easy laugh. And he adored his family."

He adored them so much that he turned down a recent promotion because it would have separated him from his family for a while.

"He was just a super nice kid," said Trina VanderBogart a pharmacy technician at his parent's store in Hartville.

A memorial service for Amundson will be held Saturday morning in the Unitarian Universalist Church in Arlington, Va. A graveside service will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

It seems unbelievable that today is 15 years since the 9/11 attacks.

We especially have Craig, and his family and friends, in our hearts and thoughts today, as we take time to reflect on the events of that day, and honor the sacrifice of the victims of the attack. We also pray for the first responders, and all those who have been affected in the years since.

We will never forget.

Hello Mrs Amundson, I have jusy finished reading Robert Fisk's book where you and you husband's name are mentioned. I was very emotional when I read of your reaction and letter which must have taken great courage after Craig's passing. We need more great people like you in this world and the time may come when our leaders share the same values. If not I am pessimistic for our future. I lost my wife to cancer in 2001 and was left with two small children to raise so I know just a little of what you may have gone through. Best wishes,

Amber, Elliott, and Charlotte: I worked with Craig in the Pentagon in Army G-1 (ODCSPER). Craig's death on 9/11 really affected me. He was a wonderful man and was so proud of you and your children. It's taken me six years to try to come to grips; I've learned to leave with it (through therapy), but it's always with me. Craig's passing hit me particularly hard because he was such a wonderful person. I'll never forget him.

the man I remember as SPC Amundson was a great man... I remember the days we would sit our office and talk about his family, where he wanted to go and what he wanted to do with his life, and what he wanted to get out of the Army... Craig and I had many conversations with the short amount of time that we spent together and there was one obvious thing to me.... He loved his wife and he loved his kids... and he lived his life for them... So on this day my thoughts are with my friends who I served with in the Pentagon...

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I knew Craig not only as a soldier but as a friend, He and I were battle buddies through basic training and roommates through AIT. I can remember our first day together in AIT. He and I had arrived late and he was nervous about how his family was doing because his wife had just had their second child the day before and she had complications. Through the next 4 months he and I would get to know each other quite well, I even felt like part of his family when his son drew a picture and sent it to me (which I still have). He was a great guy, soldier, father and friend. I'll miss him.

On the anniversary of 9-11, I wear Craig's name on a bracelet to honor his service to his country, and his sacrifice. Many people ask me about the bracelet. I tell them Craig was an Army Specialist working at the Pentagon and that he left behind a wife and two children. While I never met Craig or his family, I believe it is important to say his name aloud on this day and let people know that Craig paid the high price for the freedoms we enjoy. My thoughts and prayers are with Craig and his family.

Questions of Why? Love turned into Anger, laughter turned into tears.
When we heard that the Pentagon was attack on this day 9-11 there was so much going on around the yard, phones every where, praying that we would hear something, friends gathering to help, other husbands trying to get answers for those who are lost and confused,as the day turned into night I knew that you were gone, but a sence of frustration and anger and ?'s as to why you? why a father, husband that was devoted to his family and more, why was he taken from his family in such a horriable matter... Those questions will probley never be answer the way we want them to answer..All I know is your no longer in pain, nothing to fear, your always looking down apon your family.
