Monty Schaefer Obituary

RAPID CITY - Monty Lee Schaefer, 43, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Monty was born Aug. 24, 1968, in Mitchell to Greg and Karen (Melius) Schaefer. He attended school in Pierre and graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 1987. While in high school, he was an outstanding athlete participating and lettering in football, track and basketball.  He represented Pierre at Boys' State, graduated with honors and received a full-ride, presidential scholarship to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Monty graduated Suma Cum Laude in 1991 with a degree in Business Administration and Finance.

In August, 1991, he married his high school sweetheart, Stacey Bartlett, and together they had two beautiful daughters, Morgan (born in 1996) and McKenzie (born in 1998). His girls were the absolute loves of his life. Although Monty and Stacey were no longer married, they raised their girls together with much love and support of each other.

His daughters deeply appreciated that he never missed a sporting event, award ceremony, concert or activity in which they were involved. He coached many of the teams the girls were on, and if he wasn't coaching, he was cheering them on as their number one fan. Monty primarily worked in the banking industry and was respected greatly by his clients. He consistently and graciously gave back to his community serving on various boards and service clubs including Morning Rotary Club and the Board of Directors at Youth and Family Services.

Monty is survived by his daughters, Morgan, 15, and McKenzie, 13, and their mother, Stacey, and his parents, Greg and Karen Schaefer, all of Rapid City; two brothers, Troy (Kim) and their children, Gregory, Steven and Elizabeth of Rapid City, and Shannon (Deena) and their children, Chase and Riley of Phoenix; and many special friends who meant a lot to him.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

The family is comforted by the fact that Monty was able to help 56 individuals in need through the gift of organ/tissue donation.

Visitation with family present will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with 7 p.m. Christian wake services today at Kirk Funeral Home, 1051 E. Minnesota St.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 4500 Jackson Blvd., with Fr. Michel Mulloy presiding.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Morgan and McKenzie Schaefer's college fund at First Interstate Bank, PO Box 2530, Rapid City, SD 57709-2530.

Monty was one of the fine people I met when I moved to Pierre as a "new kid" at Riggs. He remained a good friend and as the years passed. His easy smile and friendly manner never failed to make my day. Here is hoping that his memory and kindness will bring us joy for years to come.

It is with deep regret I cannot attend my friends funeral due to my job. From the time playing t-ball to playing softball in vermillion I will always remember my classmate and good friend. I will always treasure the memories I shared with him. Monty always inspired me at vermillion to do my best. My thoughts and prayers are with his family now and forever.

I came to know Monty at the YMCA. He and I had many talks about strength training, football and just sports in general. He was always interested and supportive of my powerlifting. Monty was a kind individual that always had something good to say to my wife or I. I will miss him as will many, rest well Monty
