Ralph Dodd Obituary

RAPID CITY - Ralph D. Dodd, 88, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Fountain Springs Healthcare.

Born June 24, 1922, near Cascade in Fall River County, Ralph Donald was the fourth of 10 children of Clyde Clarence and Hilda Bertha Dodd (Merwin).

Ralph grew up on his Dad's farm, near Maverik Junction. His early years were spent working in the fields, milking cows, selling chickens and fruit, and hauling water - all those things you had to do in the hard times of the '30s. He enjoyed talking about the "Home Place" and took us there on picnics when we were young.

A World War II veteran, Ralph walked through France, Germany and Hungary and Austria. He was a life member of the VFW, proud of his service to his country.

Ralph worked construction after the war, starting at Angostura, and worked in Wyoming, and other areas of South Dakota.

Mary Elizabeth Britton and Ralph met at the country dances around Hot Springs and they married Oct. 22, 1948. They traveled together, living in their trailer until settling in Rapid City in 1952. Dad built a home for his family adding on to it as needed and lived in this home until February of this year.

Ralph and Mary always enjoyed their family gatherings on Christmas Eve, the extended family picnics in June at "birthday" times and on the Fourth of July.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, one son, six brothers, two sisters, and three great-grandchildren.

His remaining family includes a daughter, Marion Groethe of Rapid City; five sons, Donald of New Hampshire, Harold of Hill City, Gerald of Rapid City, Thomes of Kentucky, and David of Rapid City; 27 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Adam of Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 28, at The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints, 2822 Canyon Lake Drive, with Bishop Terry Hinkson officiating. Interment, with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

My deepest sympathy to you guys on the loss of your dad. I'll always remember who taught me automobile mechanics when I was a teenager. I am priviledged to have known him.

Ralph was a skilled crafsman who built the cabnets and drawers in the large family kitchen. Always willing to keep the cars of his children running, and often their friends. His work lives on, one being the retaining wall on Skyline Dr. Quality work from a quality man. My thoughts and prayers are with the Dodd family. God Bless.
