Terry Mapel Obituary

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Terry L. Mapel, 64, of Palm Desert and Rapid City, SD (by way of Wyoming, as he would say), passed away at his home on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, after an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 16, 1944 in Gillette, WY to Norman and Mary Mapel. Terry was an outstanding athlete; excelling at track, basketball, football and stock car racing. An accomplished bowler, he bowled several perfect 300's. Terry was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was recognized as one of the top State Farm insurance agents in the nation and successfully managed his agency for 28 years. Remembered for his quick wit, he was also a good listener who provided encouragement and wise counsel to friends and family in need. He also took joy in anonymous random acts of kindness. He started each morning in daily devotion and prayer for others. He fulfilled his lifelong dream of being a rancher in Moorcroft, WY, bravely breaking his wife's feisty stallion, Rocky. Devoted husband of Judy, loving father of Kerry and Sherry; he will be missed by his grandchildren, Amanda, Laura and Daniel; as well as his many nieces and nephews; and his faithful, four-footed companion, Brittney. He is survived by his brother, Roy Mapel. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Sun City Mountain View Club House in Palm Desert. Funeral services will be held in Gillette at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any donations be given to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or any random act of kindness.

Dear Judy,
Eunice called to tell me of Terry's passing. I am in AZ for the Winter so would not have known had she not called.
Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers

Terry and his mother were some of the first people we met when we moved to Gillette in 1974. We walked into the State Farm office on Gillette Avenue and were treated so well. Our prayers are with the family. Some people you don't forget, and Terry was one of them. May he be remembered with a smile.

JUDY SHERRY AND KERRY & FAMILY

TERRY was one of the best friends of my youth. As we grew up
in Gillette we spent a lot of time together. We played basketball and
football often on the same teams.
I have fond memories of those days
and perhaps will be able to share them with you later.

For now I know he is with our
Lord. I believe he is without his pain
and can run and play ball like I rember him. I wll miss him too.

My heart is heavy with the loss of one the greatest influences I had growing up. The men in my family all gave me their unique veiws on life and attitudes that have shaped me into the man I am, and still wish to be.
Uncle Terry taught me to never be afraid of being silly, being myself or just plain smiling when the world may not present obvious reasons to do so.

Judy, you are in my prayers, thoughts and forever in my heart. I love you very much and wish you all the strength and peace possible.
