Winona Brady Obituary

RAPID CITY - Winona Grace Brady died Friday, August 20, 2004, at Clarkson Mountain View Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Norfolk, Neb., to Nellie M. Barnard and the late Oscar W. Barnard, three months after her father's death. When she was six, her mother married Reed Haley and she was raised in Hot Springs and graduated from high school there. In 1942, she married William F. Lindgren. They had four children. They lived in California, Colorado, and Aberdeen. When he died in 1955, she returned to Hot Springs. She married Stanley E. Brady in 1956, and had two more children, in addition to adding two of Stan's daughters to the family. They family moved to Spearfish and then to Rapid City, where she has lived since. Nona was active in the Spearfish and Rapid City UCC churches on the local and state levels. She was always active in church work including singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and after she retired, working as a lay minister. She worked in the Pennington County Auditor's office from 1972 until 1979. In 1979, she was elected Pennington County Treasurer and was re-elected in 1983. She retired after serving two terms. She was a life-member of Beta Sigma Phi and served as President of three chapters. She was active in American Business Women's Association and served as Secretary and President. Although she enjoyed her work, her greatest love was her family. She traveled extensively throughout the country visiting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors include three sons, William Lindgren, Slippery Rock, Pa., James Lindgren, Spokane, Wash., and John Brady, Yankton; three daughters, Mary Jean Lunne, Colorado Springs, Colo., Kay Lindgren, Rapid City, and Susan Yamamoto, Honolulu, Hawaii; one stepdaughter, Patricia Brown, Hanford, Calif.; one brother, Forrest Haley, Hot Springs; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands; one brother; three sisters; her stepdaughter, Marilyn; and one grandson, William F. Lindgren III. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at South Park United Church of Christ in Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Herrboldt officiating. Cremation has taken place. The ashes will be scattered in a private family ceremony at the Brady Memorial Rose Garden in Spearfish. Memorials have been established to the Black Hills Playhouse, Hospice of the Hills, and South Park United Church of Christ. Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sorry to hear of Aunt Nona's passing. It is hard to think of that generation being gone. I am a granddaughter of Don and Alyce's. My mom, Judy, would visit A.Nona when she was in Rapid visiting her aunts. Our sincere sympathy at your loss--her loss of self has been given back in Heaven.
