Cleo Stevens-Kamelhar Obituary

Cleo Stevens-Kamelhar, 89, passed away peacefully in Norman, OK, at the home of Cleo Vastardis on March 2, 2021, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Reading, PA, on August 24, 1931, she was the daughter of the late George and Foto (Antenna) Stevens from the village of Petra on the island of Lesvos, Greece, and Reading, PA. Cleo is survived by her three nieces: Margo Apostol (Oklahoma), Niki Vastardis (Oklahoma), and Cleo Vastardis (Oklahoma); great-niece Noelle Apostol Colin, her husband Kevin and their daughter, Josephine (California); great-nephew Carver Patterson (Colorado); great-niece Laura Swan and her husband Craig (Oklahoma); sister-in-law Shirley Stevens (Pennsylvania); cousin Jeff Louis (Connecticut); stepson Aaron Kamelhar (Texas); and stepdaughter Rebecca Gutierrez (Kamelhar), her husband Gil, their son Diego and their daughter Irene (Mexico). Cleo was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Murray Kamelhar, her sisters Kula Stevens and Mary (Stevens/Vastardis) Chaffin, and her brother Constantine Gus Stevens who passed away only two weeks before Cleo. During her childhood in Reading, Cleo attended Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. In 1957 our beautiful Aunt Cleo was crowned Miss Greater Reading. Cleo often vacationed in Greece spending time with relatives. Most of her life she worked as an administrative assistant in the health industry. In 1984 Cleo married Murray, the love of her life. They lived in California before retiring to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Cleo and Murray enjoyed their life in Mexico with their many friends, including the local acting community. They loved literature, the arts, U.S. and world politics, and traveling the world extensively. After Murry passed away in 2013, Cleo moved to Norman to be close to her beloved family and in the process became known to her new friends as Aunt Cleo. Her family had the honor and privilege of caring for her as she grew older. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I can’t believe it. Cleo just popped in my mind a few minutes ago and on a lark I looked for her on Facebook. I feel so sad. I knew Cleo when she worked at Reading Hospital. There aren’t enough words for me right now. I loved Cleo. She was an amazing lady in so many ways. I’m so happy to know that she married and had a wonderful life. No one deserved it more. God bless you Cleo and rest in peace
